A British TV star has told how he flew to Dubai for alternative treatment for cancer.

Simon MacCorkindale, who stars in BBC hospital drama ‘Casualty’, was diagnosed with cancer three years ago.

In May 2006, MacCorkindale, 57, was given five years to live but he told the News of the World newspaper: “I’m going nowhere. I don’t think about a day when it comes to an end.”

MacCorkindale told how he is using a mix of different therapies and treatments to fight the cancer after it spread from his bowel to his lungs.

In January, he flew to Dubai for sessions with a Pranic healer, a system of ‘energy medicine’. He began using plant medicines, including herbs from the Amazon.

He also underwent a 12-week stint of intensive homeopathy mixed with low-dose chemo-therapy.

His regime seemed to work, as a scan showed the cancer growth had stopped.

This news comes at a time when the government is rolling out the latest H1N1 swine flu vaccine, touting the reasons to get the injection, and the media is using its typical scare tactics to get people to line up for the shot- which appears to be not only unnecessary, but also harmful. According to the CDC, "A vaccine, like any medicine, could possibly cause serious problems, such as severe allergic reactions."

Homeopaths agree that the vaccine is not the cure that the media makes it out to be. "The current vaccine against the seasonal influenza strain H1N1 is highly unlikely to provide protection against this variant," says homeopath Dr. Sulaikha Hamza. Nux Vomica, if you experience crackling in the joints and your arthritis pain is accompanied by aching and bruised feeling in and around the joint.

Buy each of these remedies from your local health food store or in FDA approved homeopathic online pharmacies so you have them on hand in case you need more than one. What is anemia?

Anemia is a medical condition in which the red blood cell count or hemoglobin is less than normal. The normal level of hemoglobin is generally different in males and females. For men, anemia is typically defined as hemoglobin level of less than 13.5 gram/100ml and in women as hemoglobin of less than 12.0 gram/100ml. These definitions may vary slightly depending on the source and the laboratory reference used.

If a middle-aged housewife with a history of good health feels tired before she completes her household chores or feels a shortness of breath and sensation of dizziness or fainting; one of the likely causes of such symptoms would anaemia. Anaemia or a reduction in the red blood cells and haemoglobin concentration in the blood is a common problem the world over and more in country like ours due to various food habits, lack of nutrition etc.

Blood has a liquid component called plasma and the cellular component comprising red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. They all have their tasks cut out. If it is the white blood cells which do the policing by looking for harmful agents and acting as the defence mechanism and platelets ready to clump at any area that threatens to open the blood vessel due to injury. The red blood cells which carrythe lifeline of all functions of the metabolism by supplying oxygen all over the body from the lungs and promptly disposing carbon di oxide from the cells back into the lungs. All seems to be well but once there is a drop red blood cell counts and the haem or the iron concentration in the RBCs which is the active part of the job that is called as anaemia.

Once there is a drop in the cells below a certain concentration the body does not find the oxygen to get on with its job. The body does not seem to complain and finds a compensatory mechanism to go on but as the days progress they seem to express in some symptoms like shortness of breath, tiredness on little exertion or palpitation; an awareness of their own heartbeat.

Anaemia could be the result of a loss of the blood cells from the system or a deficient formation of these cells.

The loss of blood could occur due to excessive menstrual bleeding, injuries or bleeding from the stomach due to ulcers, cancer of the gastrointestinal tract etc. Lack of iron in the system due to insufficient intake or improper absorption leads to this condition. Vitamin B12 and Folate are other elements necessary which are either taken in lower amounts necessary or the stomach and intestines do not have the necessary factors to absorb them in appropriate amounts.

It could also be due to erythropoietin released by the kidney to coax the bone marrow cells to produces the RBCs may go deficient. Anaemia could occur during pregnancy too as the demands are higher than usual. Alcohol intake on a regular basis comes in the way of proper formation of blood cells as it impedes the absorption of necessary vitamins. Some of the less common causes could be due to the bone marrow being affected with certain ailments like thalassaemia, leukaemia, aplastic anaemia etc.

Importance of diet is utmost in anaemia as foods rich in iron like green, leafy vegetables is ideal. While Vitamin B12 and folate are plentily available for vegetarians in products, lentils (eg: ragu), legumes, beans, nuts, cabbage, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, raisins, prunes and green leafy vegetables while nonvegetarians have a rich source in seafood, liver and marrow soup etc. To stop the cause of loss of bleeding is primary in treatment.

Past medical history shows typhoid. Family medical history shows father- diabetes, Mother- Arthritis, Uncle (maternal) - asthma

All physical generalities like appetite, thirst, sweat, sleep etc. are normal.

In mental generalities we got some individualistic symptoms. They are-

- Unrealistic financial insecurity. Though he has a lot of wealth but feels as if something will happen and he will lose them.

- Physical insecurity. Always there is fear of ill health. Fear of cancer is mostly there. That is why he used to visit all possible number of doctors and consumes all possible varieties of remedies.

- Avarice. Though he is a wealthy person but while paying even medicine cost he is hesitant. Always puts a string on every expense.

- Fastidious. Everything he wants to know in detail.

Remedy selection- The above mental generalities clubbed with DM, hypertension, thirst for small quantity of water in small interval indicated the remedy ARSENICUM ALBUM.

Case-2

Mrs A aged 55 has DM since 7 years. Often has gastric problem. Off let developed joint pain.

Past medical history shows nothing abnormal. Family medical history shows ,brother died of cancer, mother had arthritis.

All physical generalities were normal.

By nature very sweet speaking and having polite attitude. Whatever work her family members load on her shoulder she will do definitely.

On further enquiry the mental picture reflected as follows. After marriage she lived in the joint family of in-laws. The mother-in-law was very dominating. There was even no independence of eating and talking. Even a small mistake of her will bring severe criticism from mother-in-law that to in the form of a big shout and scolding. Though she used to feel angry internally but never allowed to express it. This situation continued for around 15 years. Prolonged suppression of anger reflected physically in the form of DM later.

Numbers of studies have suggested that high levels of stress may increase the risk of preterm labor and low birth weight of baby.

Homeopathic medicines are my own favorite method to augment the body’s own defenses so that they can more effectively heal themselves from various ailments, including the flu. Because of the similarity between the 1918 flu and the H1N1 flu, it may be helpful to reference homeopathy’s impressive successes in treating people during the 1918 flu. The death rates in the homeopathic hospitals in the US were only around 1%, while the death rates in conventional hospitals were closer to 30%. Another important fact from that era is that New York City had the lowest mortality rate during the 1918 flu than any city in the U.S., and this impressive statistic is primarily due to the fact that this city’s health commissioner at that time was Royal Copeland, MD, a renowned homeopathic physician, who later became a thrice-elected U.S. Senator (Franklin D. Roosevelt was even his campaign manager during his first election as senator). Copeland asserted, “There can be no doubt that the superiority of homeopathy in a purely medical condition is just as great as it was fifty years ago.”

One of today’s most popular homeopathic medicines for the flu is the popular Oscillococcinum, a medicine that has been used by homeopaths since the 1920s. There have been four controlled studies that have shown that this medicine is effective in reducing the symptoms of influenza as compared with those people given a placebo.

The effectiveness of another homeopathic remedy, called Gripp-Heel, was compared with that of conventional treatments in a prospective, observational cohort study in 485 patients with mild viral infections and symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle pain, cough or sore throat. As evaluated by the practitioners, 67.9% of patients were considered asymptomatic at the end of Gripp-Heel therapy vs. 47.9% of patients in the control group. Practitioners judged homeopathic treatments as 'successful' in 78.1% of cases vs. 52.2% for conventional therapies. Tolerability and compliance were 'very good' given for 88.9% of patients in the homoeopathic group vs. 38.8% in the conventional treatment group.

The above homeopathic medicines are primarily helpful during the first 48 hours of onset of the flu. Other homeopathic medicines to consider during this time and afterwards include: Gelsemium, Bryonia, Ipecacuanha, Arsenicum album, Eupatorium perf., Rhus toxicodendron, and Baptisia (homeopathic medicines are traditionally listed by their Latin names so that consumers and doctors will know the precise plant, mineral, or animal species of every medicine). Each of these medicines has a history of efficacy in homeopathic doses for treating the specific syndrome of symptoms that each has been found to cause when given experimentally in overdose to healthy people.

"It’s a simple solution with no side effects and available in most health food stores and some pharmacies. I’ll show you how homeopathy has been successful in many epidemics." Homeopathy is not a patented medicine that costs a lot of money. It’s not something we even touched upon in medical school but it’s safe and effective. I learned about homeopathy in my naturopathic training.

The symptoms treated by Arsenicum alba include diarrhea, vomiting, burning pains, restlessness and fever. If you have those symptoms, which are similar to the ones described for H1N1, you can take the remedy and it will treat the symptoms. Another important treatment for H1N1 is hydration. Keep up your fluid intake to match the losses due to vomiting and diarrhea.

Homeopathy and Epidemics

Two of the more well-publicized illustrations of the superiority of homeopathy were the cholera epidemics in England in the 1840s and the Yellow Fever epidemics on the Mississippi River in the 1870s.

In England, after the first cholera epidemic in London, Parliament ordered the public health department to provide complete information on how the epidemic was handled. Allopaths had several ways of treatment, all containing mercury, which resulted in anywhere from 41.3% to 71% mortality rates whereas the homeopath hospital in London had only 11 deaths overall.

Here in the states, plagued by decades of Yellow Fever epidemics, two commissions from Washington were sent to New Orleans to get to the bottom of how to deal with the problem. One was made up of allopaths and the other homeopaths. Hearings were held and reported in detail in the New Orleans Times. While the allopaths focused on trying to figure out how to prevent the disease, homeopaths meticulously combed the actual records of doctors as well as the local boards of health to see how various treatment modalities worked. As a result, it was learned that the average mortality rate of homeopathic patients in various towns was between 5.6% to 7.7% while allopathic patients suffered mortality rates of 16% or higher.

After WWI, and right after the Flexner Report was published, which led to homeopathic schools (along with all the other non-allopathic schools) being closed by political pressure being exerted on their benefactors, homeopathy experienced its greatest and most public triumph in the area of addressing epidemics. Millions of people around the world were dying of influenza. In Chicago, where the great mail order houses were located, Montgomery Ward & Company had a medical clinic for its 8,000 employees and their families staffed by homeopathic physicians. This large cluster of people experienced one lone death instead of the hundreds experienced by Marshall Field and Sears Roebuck. One homeopath practicing at the time later wrote that the allopaths lost 20 to 40% of their patients while homeopaths suffered losses of only 5 to 6% or less.

Australian scientist, Viera Scheibner in her massive research on epidemics found that homeopathic successes stood out everywhere. Scheibner, who testified in Congress in 1999, during hearings on the problems with Hepatitis B vaccine, stated that there is ample evidence in the public record and in published medical journals all over the world, “that the largest epidemics occurred in the most highly vaccinated populations, while those who were unvaccinated, did not have the same epidemics.”

As a naturopath, I must also tell the miraculous story of the founder of naturopathy, Benedict Lust, a German immigrant, who had contracted a very serious case of TB right after he came to America. At the time, TB was so rampant that it was called the White Plague and everyone feared it. Lust went back to Germany to die but fell into the hands of Father Sebastian Kneipp an advocate of “the water cure” to treat the sick. Father Kneipp also believed in teaching people how to support their health by understanding the “balance between work and leisure, stress and relaxation and the harmony between the mental, emotional, physical, social, and ecological planes.” Lust was completely cured by these methods and returned to America, with Kneipp’s blessings, to spread the teachings of natural medicine.

In the chiropractic community, several of Elissa’s personal chiropractors have stories about themselves or immediate family members who were stricken with the paralyzing effects of polio only to be completely healed within two weeks by simply utilizing natural cures available to the average chiropractor. Stories of successful polio treatment are common discussion at chiropractic conventions among the older practitioners.

Leading homoeopathic practitioners have urged the UAE health authorities to explore the benefits of homoeo medicines in the prevention of H1N1 infection.

It is not too late for the Ministry of Health to adopt an open policy for analysing the efficacy of homoeopathy for prophylactic purposes, some of them have said.

Citing that the demand for homoeo medicines as a preventive measure against H1N1 has been on the rise among patients, they urged the ministry to address the issue with the help of the local experts.

Noting that homoeopathic medicines act upon the immune system and restorative energies of the body so that it heals itself, Dr Batra said homoeo remedies automatically play a vital role in preventive medicine as they boost the body's natural defence mechanisms.

"Health officials here are doing a splendid job in keeping the disease under control. However, at a time when the world is reeling under recession too, looking at alternative medicine options such as that provided by homeopathy could be more feasible and wise," said Dr Batra.

He claimed that existing medicines in the stream could be effectively used for boosting the immune system and reducing the vulnerability to ?influenza infection.

The UAE's first licensed specialist in homoeopathy and a former member of epidemic disease research panel of the Indian government, Dr Sinsen Joseph said homoeo medicines had been known for being effective in many countries' mass preventive campaigns.

"In the case of H1N1, homoeo medicines are now being used in some parts of India under the guidance of the government there. The preventive effectiveness in such instances can be studied before taking a similar step here," said Dr Joseph who now works as a consultant with City Point International Specialist Medical Centre in Dubai.

"Only if the government here takes an initiative in exploring the potential preventive role of homoeopathy that we can also extend the service and provide the benefits to the public here, including the nationals," he said.

Another senior homoeopath in the UAE, Dr Najeeb Ahammed of Janson's Medical Centre in Dubai, said the fact that vaccinating all members of the community is not a practically ideal solution makes the preventive role of homoeo therapies more significant.

"Vaccination is mainly meant for those at high risk of infection. Since homoeo medicines help in building immunity in the body to fight back any infection without creating any side effects, they can be a better option for those not prioritised for vaccination," he said.

Nobel winner French virologist's studies explains why homoeopathic remedies work

In a recent study Professor Luc Montagnier, a French virologist who co-discovered HIV and who won the Nobel Prize in 2008, and his team report the results of a series of rigorous experiments investigating the electromagnetic properties of highly-diluted biological samples.

The study demonstrates that some bacterial DNA sequences are able to induce electromagnetic waves at high aqueous dilutions. It appears to be a resonance phenomenon triggered by the ambient electromagnetic background of very low frequency waves. The researchers used aqueous solutions that were agitated and serially diluted (the researchers note that the solutions were 'strongly agitated' and that this step was 'critical for the generation of signals'). In other words homeopathic potencies, although the word 'homeopathy' is not mentioned in the article.

The researchers found that pathogenic bacteria and viruses show a distinct electromagnetic signature at dilutions ranging from 10^-5 to 10^-12 (corresponding to 5D to 12D) and that small DNA fragments (responsible for pathogenicity) were solely accountable for the electromagnetic signal. The researchers also noted that one experiment found significant effects from dilutions as high as 10^-18 (equivalent to 18D). The electromagnetic signature changed with dilution levels but was unaffected by the initial concentration and remained even after the remaining DNA fragments were destroyed by chemical agents.

They observed that the electromagnetic signal was destroyed by heating or freezing the sample. Also, a 'cross-talk' effect was found whereby a negative sample inhibits the positive signal in another sample if they are left together overnight in a shielded container. The researchers propose that specific aqueous nanostructures form in the samples during the dilution process and are responsible for the electromagnetic effects measured.

The researchers also detected the same electromagnetic signals in the plasma and in the DNA extracted from the plasma of patients suffering from Alzheimer disease, Parkinson disease, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

This study is an important contribution to the growing evidence base in fundamental research with direct relevance to homeopathy.

Treating side-effects of cancer therapies with homoeopathy

Cancer is painful. Even more painful is the treatment by orthodox medicine. I talk of radiation therapy. This article in Natural News says that even doctors now admit that homoeopathy helps in treating the harsh side-effects of cancer treatment.

Some homeopathic remedies may successfully reduce the side effects of cancer therapies without interfering with the treatment regimen, according to a study conducted by researchers from the Cochrane Collaboration.

Led by a scientist from the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital, researchers reviewed the methodology and conclusions of eight different studies into homeopathic relief of cancer treatment side effects.

The researchers noted that few studies were found to qualify for their review, suggesting that very little conventional scientific research has been carried out into the effectiveness of homeopathic treatment.

One study, deemed high quality by the reviewers, found that a mouthwash made from an herb mixture known as Traummel S successfully reduced the symptoms of stomatisis, a side effect of chemotherapy. In stomatisis, painful sores form in the mouth.

Traummel S includes arnica, belladonna, echinacea and St. John's wort.

Another study given the Cochrane Collaboration's seal of approval found that a cream made from calendula was effective at reducing acute dermatitis in breast cancer patients. In fact, the calendula cream was even more effective at reducing the symptoms of dermatitis than the conventional pharmaceutical remedy, trolamine.

The skin inflammation known as acute dermatitis can arise as a side effect of radiation therapy.

Calendula is one of the genera of plants commonly referred to as "marigolds." Previous research has found that calendula can be effective in treating other skin conditions, such as inflammation or acne. It can also be used to reduce bleeding, and has been shown to have anti-viral and anti-inflammatory effects.

The Cochrane researchers found no evidence that any homeopathic remedy interfered with the effectiveness of conventional cancer treatments. One of the studies reviewed by the research team even found that interruptions in radiation therapy were significantly less common when the treatment was paired with homeopathic care.

OTC drugs harmful in common colds and coughs

Now is the time of year that we start to spend more time indoors, after a summer of fresh air. Our children are back in the classrooms and the adults are back at work.

This is when the germs come out of hiding and start being passed around; when the first colds of the season start.

Viruses cause most coughs and colds. Many different viruses can infect the nose and throat.

They are passed on by coughing and sneezing the virus into the air and by touching toys or other things an infected person has touched.

An average primary school child has six to eight coughs or colds per year.

A child who lives with smokers has an increased risk of developing coughs and colds with complications.

As for the treatment, according to a recent study by the Penn State College of Medicine, children’s cough syrups do not necessarily stop children’s coughs.

In fact, two of the most common active ingredients worked about as well as a placebo.

The drugs like dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant and diphenhydramine, an antihistamine are the two most infamous ingredients in many cough medicines.

These drugs came on the market before most of the newer FDA regulations went into effect.

In recent years, doctors have become so suspicious of them that the American Academy of Pediatrics stopped endorsing over-the-counter (OTC) cough medicines for the treatment of children’s coughs.

Just because a product on the drug store shelf says it is safe and effective, does not mean it does not have any side effects.

A common misconception about OTC cough medicines such as Vicks Formula 44, Drixoral Cough Liquid Caps, Sucrets Cough Control, Benylin DM, Robitussin products and so on, in whatever form, is that they will make you or your child better faster; unfortunately, this is not the case. In fact, you could be causing more harm to your child than you can imagine.

According to the FDA, overuse of these OTC preparations can lead to serious adverse events such as brain damage, loss of consciousness, irregular heartbeat, seizures and death.

These types of side effects seem to be very frequent in OTC medicines; another example would be the public health advisory warnings that were issued in November 2000 about phenylpropanolamine (PPA), another ingredient that used to be found in many over-the-counter cold medications. This ingredient was linked to causing strokes and brain hemorrhage in some patients. I would rather have the cold, thank you very much.

This type of medicating does not really make sense.

Those glossy magazine ads and TV commercials that portray the happy family sitting at the breakfast table while “Dr Mom” administers cough medicine are all orchestrated to make you feel as if you too can be happy and have the same “TV family experience” by suppressing coughs and buying into their program.

It is a very good thing we are more intelligent than that.

Are H1N1 vaccines safe? Is the swine flu scare created by drug companies?

Let us examine the points.

The present flu vaccines are useless

There is little evidence that flu vaccines are effective in preventing the flu, so says Tom Jefferson, MD, arguably the world’s leading expert on influenza vaccines.

Dr. Jefferson has authored 10 reviews of research on the influenza vaccine for the Cochrane Collaboration, which is a widely recognized leading international science institution that evaluates clinical research.
Although the media commonly promotes the flu vaccine for children, Jefferson and his research group summarized their investigation on this subject by asserting, “National policies for the vaccination of healthy young children are based on very little evidence.” They expressed strongest concern about the lack of efficacy and safety of flu vaccination of infants two years of age and under. They did note that the flu vaccine is effective in reducing the flu in children over two years of age, but they found little evidence that the flu vaccine was even effective in reducing school absences. Further, they found “no convincing evidence that vaccines can reduce mortality, hospital admissions, serious complications and community transmission of influenza.”

The strongest evidence of benefit to the flu vaccine is in the elderly. However, the researchers found that the benefits to the elderly were “modest.” In fact, the number of flu-related deaths in elderly Americans has actually increased steadily during the past 33-year-period despite the fact that there has been a large increase in flu vaccinations for this population. Only 20% of all elderly Americans had a flu shot in 1980, compared with 65% in 2001.

Jefferson expresses some considerable surprise at how few studies have been conducted on the elderly, especially recently. He notes, “Only five randomly controlled trials have been carried out in elderly people, of which only one was carried out in the past 2 decades using vaccines available today.”

Are the H1N1 vaccines safe?

Dr Jefferson raises the following points.

1) The study was tiny, only 240 adults. The authors made reassuring statements about Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS), which is ridiculous because GBS occurs in one out of 750,000 to 1 million vaccinations, and this study only had 240 participants;

2) One-third of these volunteers had side effects that resembled influenza-like illness (fevers, headaches, sore throats, etc.), so they were vaccinating to prevent symptoms that they were causing;

3) There was no placebo arm in the study, yet there’s no ethical excuse for not having a placebo arm because these are experimental vaccines; and

4) The description of what additive substances were in the vaccine was unclear. We know that there is thimerosal [mercury] in this H1N1 vaccine, but its manufacturer did not say whether there are additional substances like aluminum, which can be found in many other vaccines. We just don’t know. And they are advising this vaccine for pregnant women and children over six months of age!

The Swine Flu was hyped by the drug companies

In light of some recent efforts to make the H1N1 vaccination “mandatory,” it seems that Big Pharma’s commercial operations have become so successful that they have successfully lobbied politicians to require health and medical workers to get the H1N1 vaccine. Big Pharma’s efforts have been so successful that they have almost successfully fooled other scientists to think that it is “unethical” to conduct a placebo-controlled trial due to the (incorrect) assumption that flu vaccines are effective.

Even Big Media whose coffers are filled with Big Pharma’s advertising are not immune to this influence. Isn’t it a bit strange that the research of Tom Jefferson and his team have been virtually ignored by Big Media, despite the fact that their research has been published in the BMJ (British Medical Journal), the Lancet, the Cochrane Database, and other high-impact scientific journals. One would hope that the media and government would follow the research rather than the money.

How will you know if the homoeopath is good?

Some hints, some pointers for you to decide whether the homoeopath you are seeing is any good.

You suffer from a chronic (long lasting) ailment. You have tried allopathy and it does not seem to have helped you. At best those tablets, capsules ans injections have only given temporary relief. You decide to consult a homoeopath. How will you know if he is any good?

(I have assumed the homeopath is a 'he'. No gender bias intended. Just saving space and avoiding repetition. Some of the best homoeopaths have been and are women)

Mind you I am talking here of chronic ailments. Given below are some hints for you to decide.

He takes quite a long time when you see him. The session goes on for a hour or two.
He is polite and non-judgemental. He does not, by words or body language, show that he has a distaste for you, your thoughts, what you say or the illness you have.
He lets you talk. He says little himself. He encourages you to talk. He listens interestedly. He only interrupts you if he feels you are rambling or going astray.
He has a piece of paper or a notepad on which he scribbles from time to time.
He asks you personal questions. About your sex life, your thoughts towards your family, your family. Your likes and dislikes.
He asks you of diseases in your family. May be even one or two generations away.
He is never rude. He is polite and patient.
When you phone him up after taking the first dose of your homoeopathic medicine, to tell him about how you feel (better or worse), he will listen carefully and reassure you not to worry.
Some times he may warn you that after taking the medicine you may feel lousy for some time, but will feel better afterwards.
He may ask you to show your medical reports. He may even ask you get some new tests done.

If he is all that, grab him! He is a darned good homoeopath! If he is not at all (not even one point) as described above, run!

It is early September. My husband and I accompany Sahara (5) and Aysha (6) to their beginning-of-the-year school assembly with mixed feelings: it’s nice to get a bit more time to ourselves, yet summer was so much fun that we wish it weren’t over quite so soon. During the assembly, the principal mentions swine flu, a topic that has been mentioned a lot by the media during the past few months. The principal assures parents that the school will not be closed if some of the students become infected with swine flu. I am relieved to hear that, since I am very critical of all the scare tactics that the mainstream media has resorted to regarding the supposed swine-flu “epidemic”. Also, unlike many other parents, I am not worried at all if my kids are exposed to either the regular flu or the swine flu, because I have had years of formal training in classical homeopathy, a natural healing art that has been used successfully for the treatment of all types of flus for more than 200 years.

My kids will not be getting either the swine-flu shot or the regular flu shot this year. Thanks to long-term constitutional homeopathic treatment, my kids have a strong immunity. So I don’t even have to worry about protecting them against the flu, because most people who die from the flu have compromised immune systems. But if for some reason I were worried about my kids getting the flu, I would give them the homeopathic remedy influenzinum. Influenzinum is made from flu viruses and then prepared in a homeopathic manner so as to render it safe and nontoxic. It has been used for at least the past 150 years as a natural flu preventative. In 1998, the Société Française d’Homéopathie conducted a survey of 23 homeopathic doctors and 453 patients concerning their use of influenzinum as a flu preventative over a 10-year period. Results of the survey were remarkable. In approximately 90 percent of the cases, no instances of the flu occurred when influenzinum was used.

My children are young, and their immune systems are still developing, so there is a chance that they will end up getting the flu this year. If they do, I will be treating them confidently with homeopathy, which was used effectively to treat one of the deadliest strains of flu in history, the 1918 Spanish flu. During the Spanish flu, Americans who were treated with traditional medicine had a mortality rate of 28.2 percent, while those who were treated with homeopathic medicines only had a mortality rate of 1.05 percent, according to a report by the American Homeopathic Institute in 1921.

There are many possible remedies for the flu, depending upon the particular symptoms that the infected person is experiencing. During the Spanish flu, homeopathic gelsemium was the most frequently used remedy. In general, gelsemium is thought of as the number-one remedy for the flu. Homeopathic bryonia and Eupatorium perfoliatum are also very frequently used remedies.

Perhaps the most frustrating thing about homeopathy is that it is often difficult to decide between one homeopathic remedy and another. If you are not sure which remedy to use for the flu, a sure bet is Oscillococcinum. Oscillococcinum is a homeopathic remedy invented in 1925, made from the liver and heart of a Barbary duck. There have been two large double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials measuring the efficacy of Oscillococcinum for the flu. The results of the first trial were published in 1989 in Britain’s Journal of Pharmacology, and the results of the second trial were published in 1998 in the Homeopathic Journal. The studies showed that Oscillococcinum reduces the duration of the flu, speeds recovery, and reduces flu symptoms such as pain, fever, and backache.

Homeopathy is a safe medicine for the flu, with no side effects; the same cannot be said for traditional flu treatments.

Here, we gave family kits, which have medicines for a 4-member family for three days,” said Dr A L Patil, the hospital’s principal and hospital superintendent.

The medicine is given free of cost and has no side-affects, he said. However, a detailed report of the research work will be available after a month.

For these homeopathic remedies can be helpful if, in respective order, you're feeling anxious and fearful, suffering pre-match nerves in the stands at Centre Court or, worse still, concerned that you might be grief-stricken when the umpire calls game, set and match.

You won't be alone in relying on homeopathic help; in the commentary box, former England women's number one Annabel Croft, now a TV presenter and mother of three, will be reaching for a cocktail of remedies to see her through the tournament.

Annabel, who is reporting from Wimbledon for BBC Radio 5 Live and GMTV, has been taking homeopathic medicine in advance of the competition to prepare for whatever comes her way this week.

But her first encounter with homeopathy – a form of complementary treatment based on the premise that tiny quantities of certain substances can stimulate the body's natural forces of recovery – came in rather more dramatic circumstances.

In 2003, Annabel, now 42, began suffering throbbing pains on her lower left-hand side. The pain was sometimes so intense that, on several occasions, it caused her to faint. At one point, her daughter Amber, now 15, was so frightened she was on the verge of calling an ambulance.

After referral from a GP, an ultrasound scan from a private doctor showed that Annabel had developed a cyst on her left ovary. While ovarian cysts – fluid-filled sacs – are common and usually painless, if they swell, they can cause acute pain and may need to be removed. Annabel's pain was "unbearable", she says, and her GP thought she would need an operation.

When cysts become a serious problem, they fall into three types. According to the NHS Choices, an online compendium from the health service, if a cyst is growing on a stem from an ovary, the stem can become twisted. This stops the blood supply, causing severe discomfort in the lower abdomen. Alternatively, it may burst, with very painful results. The effects you feel depend on what the cyst contained, whether it is infected and if there is any bleeding. Lastly, occasionally, a cyst is an early form of ovarian cancer. However, about 95 per cent are non-cancerous.

When Annabel mentioned her cyst to a friend, she was advised to see local homeopath Hilery Dorrian, but was sceptical. "I'd grown up believing diseases were out there waiting to get us. When I saw Hilery, I was astonished to see my ideas of health turned on their head. She explained to me that homeopathy treats the real causes of illness in the body, not just the symptoms – as conventional medicine does. The whole concept made so much sense to me. It was a huge turning point.

"Hilery didn't perform a physical examination. Instead, she asked me about my background, my personality, my emotions, what made me stressed – even my parents' health. She constructed a picture of me and gave me a remedy made up exactly to treat my left ovary."

Homeopathic remedies can be taken in several ways, the most traditional being to place small white pillules – pin-head-sized sucrose pills containing an active ingredient diluted down to microscopic quantities – under the tongue, several times a day. They can be dissolved in warm water if preferred, and creams and tinctures containing the key ingredients are also available.

Annabel left Dorrain's homeopathy centre with an open mind, but not expecting a miracle. However, after taking the prescribed pillules, her cyst gradually became less painful; the throbbing stopped; and she never went back to her GP. She is convinced that the homeopathic remedies she took enhanced and perhaps speeded up the healing process.

Annabel has been back to see Hilery – at a cost of about £30 a time – every six weeks in the past five years to get what she describes as an MOT. "And at home we all rely on homeopathic medicine. When I or one of the children [Amber, Charlie, 13, and Lily, 11] have a cold, we take pulsatilla [a native British flower]. And I always have handy some arnica for bruises, calendula for cuts and grazes, belladonna [not poisonous at this level of dilution] for a throbbing head, and nux vomica [a tree extract that contains traces of strychnine], which I take after the occasional over-indulgence. It gets rid of that 'uhhh' feeling in the morning."

When the family went to Thailand for a wedding, Amber suffered severe food poisoning. "I gave her arsenicum album, which worked very quickly. She went from throwing up all night to dancing at the party."

Annabel's husband, Mel Coleman, a 46-year-old former yachtsman and now businessman, is also a convert ("although he rarely gets more than minor ailments").

Annabel's most recent illness was a bout of tonsillitis; she took a remedy mixed by Hilery, and began to recover within an hour. "I'm passionate about homeopathy," she says. "I sing its praises at dinner parties where I find my audience is one half sceptical and one half increasingly curious."

And she backs the notion that homeopathy might be useful at Wimbledon. "I've used gelsemium in the past to calm my nerves before presenting Wimbledon, but it's possible it may also work for Andy. However, homeopathic remedies are designed to help with specific symptoms and Andy's may be different to mine."

As the patriotic money is on Andy Murray to win Wimbledon this year, perhaps we should follow Annabel's lead and stock up on nux vomica, the traditional cure after you've been celebrating too much, just in case.

The great Indian homoeopath, Rajan Sankaran, has come out with his new book.

This is the latest in the series by Rajan Sankaran, a widely acclaimed homoeopath. The book, which attracts even a non-practitioner of homeopathy, underlines that “something else lives within us” that causes emotional upheaval during stress-induced illnesses. Insight into two primary questions — what makes us what we are and what makes us ill — shows how homoeopathy is practised by taking a patient to the “sensation” level because the awareness of this deepest experience is in itself a healing process.

Levels of experience

The fundamental idea behind Sankaran’s approach is that there are levels of experience, the deepest, unique, and most vital of them being the one that is common to both body and mind and is called “sensation.” It is at this level there is an energy that corresponds to something “non-human,” which the author compares to a plant, mineral or an animal. It may sound weird but Sankaran says it is as if there are “two songs playing in an individual” — the human, which we all perceive and know to be normal, and the non-human, which we perhaps don’t recognise or acknowledge.

It is this non-human song that expresses itself in the language of its kingdom — plant sensitivity, mineral structure, or animal survival — and is more evident during periods of stress. He goes on to argue that both the human and non-human songs are harmonious but trouble comes when they play together, and the result is “discord leading to illness.”

Method

Every individual has the qualities of all the kingdoms but only one core sensation level and one constant discomfort. Sankaran adopts the method of “turning down the volume” of the identified kingdom in each ailing individual. When it is done, health returns. With this as the crux, he takes the reader through the several cases he has handled over the years. There is something special about the process as the aim is to find the non-human part of the person and discern what is concealed by the regular human expressions.

He chases the main complaint of any patient through careful questioning, and fathoms the kingdom playing the other song. “It is this other song which drives an individual’s emotions, dreams, ambitions, work, relationships, illnesses and even circumstances,” he says, making the point that it is the unconscious expressions like hand gestures that “most truthfully portray the deepest level of sensation and energy in any individual and describe the other song.” Sankaran shows a sense of profound confidence in his methodology. It helps in determining the reaction pattern of a patient indicating the perceived nature of the illness in 10 categories, ranging from panic to optimism to hopelessness. These reaction patterns then help in finding remedies once the kingdom is discovered. For instance, plant is related to hypersensitivity and reactivity and once it is determined that a patient needs a plant remedy, the physician identifies the specific plant. With minerals is identified the patient’s structure and the challenge to it which arises from a sense of lack of, or losing, something. The animal kingdom relates to competition, comparison, and survival, and these are indicated by a patient’s speech and body movements. When the source of stress, which does not lie in any external reality, is accurately pin-pointed, homeopathic cure becomes easy.

Case

Sankaran cites the case of a woman patient with urticaria (hives), who always felt being persecuted and victimised by her life situation. From her expressions of being a victim, her competition with and jealousy of other family members, and other facets of her case, the doctor concluded that she needed an animal kingdom remedy. As the questioning progressed, she expressed her dislike for insects, especially bees. On the doctor administering the appropriate homeopathic medicine, her skin ailment disappeared, and her perception of her life situation changed.

Enriched by the vivid description by a plethora of cases, the book makes a useful reading for homoeopathy practitioners — beginners and old-timers alike. Its merit lies in the scale of its view revealing the art of healing. The author’s overarching philosophy is explicit and intelligible, and the exposition is such as to make understanding of the subject easy.

Europeans are increasingly turning to Homoeopathy, especially in dealing with the adverse effects of chemo-therapy

Homeopathic medicines may play a role in preventing and treating the adverse effects of cancer treatment, new research has found.

A UK review of eight studies with a total of 664 participants found preliminary data in support of the efficacy of topical calendula and a homeopathic mouthwash for chemotherapy and radiotherapy adverse effects.

A study of 254 patients demonstrated the superiority of calendula ointment over trolamine (a topical agent not containing corticosteroids) for the prevention of acute dermatitis in women undergoing radiotherapy for breast cancer.

However, the calendula ointment used in this study was prepared according to the German Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia and so the results may not apply to topical preparations of calendula extracts prepared by different methods, the authors cautioned.

A trial of 32 patients found that Traumeel S (a proprietary complex homeopathic medicine) demonstrated superiority over placebo as a mouthwash for chemotherapy-induced stomatitis.

The review found no convincing evidence for the efficacy of homeopathic medicines for other adverse symptoms and skin reactions related to cancer treatment.

Homeopathy is used widely by cancer patients to treat the often very unpleasant side effects of their treatment. A 1998 review found that complementary therapies were used by up to 64 per cent of patients with cancer at some stage of their illness and a 2005 study found that homeopathy was in the top five most commonly used complementary therapies by patients with cancer in seven out of 14 European countries.

Homoeopathy vital to treat children's ailments

A Canadian homoeopath tells us why homoeopathy is indispensable in treating ailments of children.

It was early September. As per my usual daily routine, I was dropping my two kids off at their Montessori school. Aysha, my very mature and independent 5-year-old, bounded up the school steps and greeted the teacher at the door confidently. Her younger sister, Sahara, age four, was not as keen as her sister to get to class. Sahara, who is more goofy by nature, was more interested in hanging and climbing on the metal railing outside of the school. As she placed her hand on the metal bars, her silly smile turned into a painful grimace and she let out a bloodcurdling scream. She started crying hysterically. I ran to see what had happened and discovered the source of her distress, a huge wasp on the railing. Her hand was swollen from the sting, and I could tell by the size of the wasp and by her reaction that she was in a lot of pain.

Other parents were giving me advice such as, “Put some baking soda on it,” but I knew exactly what to do. I rushed Sahara home and promptly gave her a couple doses of homeopathic Apis mellifica. Immediately, the swelling went down, and Sahara collected herself and stopped screaming. Half an hour after she was stung, I sent her back to school with a few doses of Apis in her pocket. Later that night, all traces of the bee sting were gone. (Of course, if you are allergic to bee venom or are showing signs of a severe reaction to a sting, go immediately to the nearest emergency room.)

Homeopathy is a system of natural medicine that has been used effectively for chronic and acute health conditions for more than 200 years. It was first pioneered by German doctor Samuel Hahnemann. It is such a versatile form of medicine that it can also be used for first aid. Unfortunately, homeopathy is not very well known in North America. It is, however, very popular in other parts of the world, such as Europe and India. In London, for example, they even have a homeopathic hospital. Prince Charles is a very loyal and vocal advocate for homeopathy.

Homeopathic remedies come in sugar-pill form, and are therefore very pleasant and sweet-tasting. Parents have no problem getting their kids to take homeopathic remedies because of this. Homeopathic remedies should always be taken dry, with no food or drink, dissolved under the tongue. They can be purchased at local health-food stores or at some homeopathic clinics. Most homeopathic products in Canada are distributed by a homeopathic company based in Quebec, called Boiron. Some homeopathic clinics also sell homeopathic first-aid kits, which I strongly believe no household should be without.

I rely solely on my homeopathic first-aid kit for my children’s injuries. Whenever Sahara and Aysha fall down or get injured, I immediately reach for the Arnica bottle after the normal cleaning of any scrapes or cuts. Arnica is a remedy that is good for any type of injury, especially for the prevention of bruising and swelling after a fall or impact. Immediately after taking one dose of Arnica, my children stop crying. Before using Arnica, my children bruised normally just like other children. Now, because I usually use this remedy, they hardly ever bruise. Also, if they have hit themselves on the head and a goose egg appears, I give them a few doses of Arnica and the swelling goes down and the goose egg disappears within a few hours. Don’t believe me? Try it yourself. I use it only in a high 1M potency. Because of this strength, only one dose is needed. For more severe impacts, the 1M might have to be repeated a few more times in 15- to 30-minute intervals.

When it comes to injuries, Arnica is unbelievably useful. I cannot say enough good things about this remedy. It is like magic. After any type of injury, whether it be a muscle strain, puncture wound, or bruise, take one dose of Arnica first. After that, give one of the remedies listed below for the specific type of injury that is indicated.

Apis was mentioned at the beginning of this article. It is a very good remedy to have on hand, one that is used to take away the pain, swelling, and redness after a bee sting or insect bite. I like to use this remedy in a 200C potency, repeated every 15 to 30 minutes for a few doses.

To prevent infection, homeopaths use a remedy called Ledum palustre. If your child is running around the beach or park barefoot and steps on glass or a rusty nail that pierces the skin, think of Ledum. If the wound looks serious, you can administer this remedy on your way to the hospital. Common sense is, obviously, your best defence. It is also useful to prevent infection after an animal bite. Ledum works best in the 30C potency. It can be given every 15 to 30 minutes in three doses, then can be given three times a day until the danger of infection has passed. If an infection develops that quickly gets worse or does not respond to this treatment, visit emergency.

We also use Calendula cream topically, which is very good for closing minor open wounds.

Hypericum is a remedy that we use for injuries to nerves. The main indication for Hypericum is shooting pain. In cases where there is a wound that is already infected, Ledum will not help. Once a wound is infected and there is shooting pain, you must use Hypericum. It is also a useful remedy for any kind of nerve pain and spinal injuries. This remedy works best in the 30C or 200C potency, repeated every 15 to 30 minutes until there is relief. Of course, if the injury or infection is serious, use your common sense and also visit the doctor or hospital.

Now we are going to talk about two very common sports-injury remedies: Rhus toxicodendron and Bryonia. Rhus tox and Bryonia are for injuries to the muscles, joints, and tendons. Bryonia is the right medicine if the injury is worse from any kind of motion and better from lying down and not moving the injured part. With a Rhus tox injury, the injury might be worse from starting to move, but once the person gets moving the injury feels better. Generally, with Rhus tox, movement brings relief to the injury. For these remedies, use either the 30C or 200C potency. A few repetitions 15 to 30 minutes apart should bring relief. If the problem is more chronic, a 30C potency repeated three times a day may be necessary.

For injuries of the cartilage, bones, and ligaments, we use Ruta graveolens. It can also be a useful remedy for sprains and strains if Arnica, Rhus tox, or Bryonia have not helped. This remedy has a special affinity for the knees and elbows and can be given in a 30C or 200C potency, like Bryonia or Rhus tox, repeated a few times or daily if needed.

There are more homeopathic first-aid remedies, but these are the basic ones that everyone should have in their first-aid kit. Carry these remedies with you to the great outdoors, and you can play and enjoy your summer worry-free. For more chronic conditions, you may have to consult a classical homeopath.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder where the human body either does not produce or properly use insulin, a hormone that is required to convert Sugar , Starches and other food into Energy .The human body has to maintain the Blood Glucose level within a very narrow range, which is done with insulin and glucagons. Diabetes is defined as abnormally High sugar level in blood and presence of sugar in urine due to lack or decreased proportion of Insulin in human body. The Normal Blood Sugar levels should not exceed more than 100 mg% in Fasting state and 140 mg% , 2 hours after food in take which is called PP ( Post Perandial).

Types of Diabetes

Type I : This occur in young people, usually before the age of 20 years. Insulin is essential for its treatment.

Type II : It may occur at any age group but usually diagnosed after the age of 40 years. Oral hypoglycemic agents are the choice of treatment. Insulin is required only occasionally for the treatment of Type II diabetes.

Gestational Diabetes : It is detected during pregnancy. Treatment is usually not required. Blood sugar levels come down to the Normal after delivery of the baby.

DIABETES (Type - I) Also known as Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM ).

Diabetes mellitus is a syndrome ( group/set of symptoms) characterized by increased level of sugar (glucose) in the blood due to deficiency or inactivity of hormone “Insulin” that is absolutely necessary to monitor glucose metabolism of body. It occurs when Pancreas no longer produces any or very little Insulin. The immune system attacks the insulin producing Beta Cells in the pancreas and destroy them. Insulin is needed in the body to use sugar for producing energy. Approximately 10% of people with diabeteshave Type-I diabetes. Someone with IDDM needs daily injections of Insulin.

Diabetes is a worldwide disease and if not attended properly leads to serious complications.

IDDM (Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus) or Type 1 diabetes is result of decreased production of hormone ‘”Insulin” by the pancreas (the organ that synthesizes insulin). Various factors including viral infections, stress, certain foods are known to trigger or aggravate the condition. But the root cause is disturbance of immune system where the defense mechanism of own body starts attacking the organs of own body and tissues. GESTATIONALL DIABETES

It is a temporary condition which occurs during pregnancy. It affects 0.5% of pregnant women, with 40% of those cases developing into Type-II Diabetes later in life times. Treatment is usually not required. Blood sugar levels come down to the Normal after delivery of the baby.

SYMPTOMS

In both types of Diabetes , Signs and Symptoms are more likely to be similar as the Blood Sugar is High, either due to less or no production of Insulin, or Insulin resistance.

Diabetes can also be asymptomatic, however, the common symptoms are Increased Thirst, Appetite, Increased Urination, Sudden Loss of Weight or Increase in Weight, Easy Fatigability, Pruritis (Itching) - usually around ******* Organs, Numbness of Limbs, Non Haling of Cuts and Wounds, Frequently Changing Vision Power, Recurrent Skin Infections ( Fungal and Pyogenic). Few people are diagnosed only at the time of routine screening test before tooth extraction, operations or before starting the L.I.C. policies. Therefore people suffering with the above mentioned symptoms must go for blood sugar Testing.

Diabetes Type-I

In type-I the pancreas stops producing insulin due to an autoimmune response or possibly, a viral attack on the pancreas. In the absence of insulin body cells do not get the required glucose for producing ATP( Adenosin Triphosphate) units, which results in primary symptoms in the form of nausea and vomiting. In later stages, which lead to breaking down the muscle tissue and fat for producing energy causing fast weight loss.

Diabetes Type - II

- INCREASED FATIGUE :- Unexplainable weakness, due to inefficiency of the cell in the metabolizing Glucose the reserve fat of the body is metabolized to gain energy.

What is hay fever? Its symptoms

Each spring, summer, and fall, trees, weeds and grasses release tiny pollen grains into the air. Some of the pollen ends up in your nose and throat. This can trigger a type of allergy called hay fever.

Symptoms can include

Sneezing, often with a runny or clogged nose
Coughing and postnasal drip
Itching eyes, nose and throat
Dark circles under the eyes

HAY fever sufferers are being offered an alternative way to ease their symptoms and gradually reduce their sensitivity to pollens.

Every spring and summer, an estimated two in 10 people in the UK suffer from hay fever.
Also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis, it is caused by an allergy to airborne substances such as tree, flower or grass pollen, which affects the nose, sinuses, throat and eyes.

Symptoms can be similar to a cold, and include a runny nose, watery eyes and
repeated sneezing attacks.

As with all allergies, the symptoms happen as a result of the body's immune system overreacting to a normally harmless substance.

The most common form of treatment is anti-histamines, but natural alternatives are becoming increasingly popular.

Local homeopath Karen Hampton, from Broadclyst, has recently been telling Exeter shoppers during Homeopathy Awareness Week how homeopathic remedies can not only tackle the symptoms, but reduce their severity over time.

Karen explained: "Homeopathic remedies stimulate your own healing process by boosting the immune system, unlike mainstream drugs which fight it.

"For example, if you have an allergic reaction you are prescribed anti-histamines and if you have inflammation you are given anti-inflammatory medication. These drugs work against your body's reactions, whereas homeopathic medicines work with it.

"Conventional hay fever medicine only works while you are taking it. In many cases, a course of professional homeopathic treatment will reduce the inherited tendency to have allergic reactions, then yearly top-up prescriptions taken over one or two days can ease people through spring and summer.

"Homeopathy is a safe and gentle form of treatment which can be used effectively alongside conventional medication."

Homeopathy has been used successfully for more than 200 years and has been available on the National Health Service since its inception in 1948. There are now five NHS homeopathic hospitals, the nearest in Bristol.

Homeopathy is described as a system of medicine which is based on treating the individual with highly diluted substances given in mainly tablet form. These are called remedies.
It is a concept Karen, who holds clinics at her home in Broadclyst as well as in Sidmouth, often finds herself explaining to people.

She said: "Most people don't know what homeopathy is. A lot of people confuse it with aromatherapy. The two are totally different.

"Homeopathy is a complete system of medicine based on long-established principles, one of which is that like cures like.

"These principles differ greatly from our mainstream medicine, so initially it's a huge leap for people to take. The in-depth questions we ask are very different from the five or six minutes people get with their doctor.

"We are interested in things such as what types of food people like and when their symptoms are best and worst.

"Some critics are very scathing about homeopathy, often knowing little about it, and say it's all in the mind. When people say that I point out that it is used with great results on small babies and animals who have no idea what the placebo effect means."

Common concerns Karen is used to hearing among hay fever sufferers is they struggle with side-effects of over-the-counter medicines, they don't want to take anti-histamines over such a long period and treatments stop working after a few years.

Karen said: "A number of research trials into the use of homeopathic remedies in the treatment of patients with hay fever have shown significant improvement in symptoms."

Some of you may wonder why I endorse homeopathic remedies so I thought I would share my experience. I have been using homeopathic remedies for as long as I remember. My mother first used them to help her recover from a serious illness. Since then, homeopathic remedies have been a big part of my life. It would probably bore you to tears for me to list every single instance that a homeopathic helped me...but let's just say that the list is very long. I can honestly say that my quality of life wouldn't be nearly what it is today without homeopathy. Below is an article I wrote about easy tips to using homeopathic remedies. On a recent trip to the Vitamin Cottage off of 15th street near Downtown Denver, I witnessed a woman browsing the rows of homeopathic remedies and asking an employee numerous questions. That trip provided the inspiration for this article because although homeopathic remedies have been around much longer than most types of Western medicine, many people have no idea what they are, how they work or how to use them.

Homeopathy was first discovered by Samuel Hahnemann in 1796 when he came up with the principle that “like cures like.” Thus, each homeopathic remedy is made from an extremely diluted substance that has similar qualities to the symptoms it is targeting. It is thought that when the body encounters the homeopathic, it responds and combats the corresponding symptoms. Although, there have been scientific studies that have dispelled the merits of homeopathy, it’s sheer staying power and number of users around the world say a lot about its effectiveness. In fact, homeopathic remedies are used by England’s Royal Family and widely prescribed by Physicians in Europe and Asia.

When choosing a homeopathic remedy it’s a good idea to first check with your healthcare provider. You may be pleasantly surprised how many Western Physicians are becoming more knowledgeable about homeopathy and can advise you accordingly. Recently, a friend of mine told me about a doctor she discovered at Kaiser who is both a Naturopath and a MD – pretty exciting stuff! If your primary doctor isn’t receptive, consider reaching out to a Naturopath for a recommendation. Whomever you go to, the most important thing is that you don’t feel belittled or patronized for wanting to explore another health option—especially one like homeopathy that has been around for a long time and has many fans around the world.

Regardless of which remedies that you end up choosing there are general rules that apply to all homeopathic remedies. First, never touch them as this can disturb the remedies. Instead, always pour them into the bottle cap first before putting them into your mouth and letting them dissolve under your tongue (If you use a liquid, squirt it directly under your tongue without touching the dropper to your mouth). Next, don’t eat or drink anything for at least 20 minutes before or after you take the homeopathic so that they can be absorbed directly into your system.

Also, when deciding on a healing path with your healthcare adviser, work on one set of correlating symptoms at a time so you don’t overload yourself with too many remedies. Even though little to no adverse side effects have been reported, starting with too many homeopathic remedies too fast can be overwhelming. Lastly, if you purchase your remedies from a health food store, ask the cashier not to scan them at checkout. Although some argue that scanning is fine, there is also a belief that it could weaken the energetic quality of the homeopathic—so there’s no point in taking the risk.

The Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Chest Diseases (RGICD) on Tuesday started using homeopathy for treating people with the H1N1 virus.

The move comes in the backdrop of 21 more people in the state testing positive for swine flu, with 15 of them from Bangalore and three each from Belgaum and Davangere.

Of the 21 cases, 11 were of category A, six of category B and four of category C.

The first day of the new initiative saw more than 300 people with mild symptoms of the disease being screened at the homeopathy counter at RGICD by six doctors of the Government Homeopathy Medical College (GHMC).

“Homeopathic medicine has a history spanning more than 300 years. Based on the core principle that similar cures similar, very dilute solutions are administered to cure the diseases and H1N1 patients are getting relief from our medicines. “The diluted globules help them improve their immunity,” Dr Dassappa of GHMC told Express.

“The integration of allopathy and homeopathy will not only cure the patient but also help strengthen the immunity level to fight the virus,” Dr Sahshidhar Buggi, medical superintendent, RGCID said.

"Why I became a Homeopath". A story of a psychotherapist

Homoeopathy with its emphasis on the mind of patients, appealed to this psycho-therapist. She learnt it.

I became a therapist in 1976, and always said if I knew a way to shorten the time it took to do therapy, I’d use it. I am traditionally trained, and have avoided therapeutic fads and trendy techniques, but I was sometimes frustrated by the lack of progress, and felt that something else, besides talking therapy, was needed. I felt that the mind/body split was an artificial one, and also resisted the idea that all mental distress is caused by some chemical imbalance in the brain. We have bodies and we have psyches and somehow we have to figure out a way to treat them both.

Around the time I was experiencing this frustration, there was a great increase in psychotropic medication being used: anti-depressants, anti-anxiety medications, sleep medications, or some combination of the above (and a few others occasionally thrown into the mix). I was the only mother in the carpool of six who was not taking an antidepressant. Clients would come to me and tell me their family practice doctors recommended antidepressants simply because they were in therapy, not because they displayed clinical symptoms of depression.

Don’t get me wrong – medication is an important aspect of treatment for some emotional and mental conditions. Some people can’t function without it, and others would have severely restricted lives without the benefits of psychotropic medication.

The problem is, it is frequently overprescribed, or poorly monitored, and just plain unnecessary. In these cases, people seemed to have more difficulty accessing their feelings and moving through things. Some people didn’t like the side effects, and others didn’t want to take medicine for other reasons – pregnancy or nursing, for instance, or personal beliefs. Others did not want to give their children medication for problems like ADD, even though their children clearly needed more help than school counseling and talk therapy could give.

After being treated successfully with homeopathy, and seeing my family and friends respond to homeopathic treatment, I began to refer my psychotherapy clients to homeopaths. While I had originally thought of homeopathy only as treatment for the body, with the evolution of homeopathy and my greater understanding of its uses, I could see its value for psychological conditions.

I noticed that the clients who received homeopathic treatment seemed to progress in therapy at an accelerated pace. They seemed less afraid to face what had previously felt unbearable, or they just simple seemed to get “unstuck.”

After a few years of referring my clients to homeopaths for treatment, I realized that I had the advantage of knowing them on a deeper level than the homeopathic clinician I was referring them to. I decided to study homeopathy myself, and to find a way to integrate homeopathy into psychotherapy. I went to a four-year training program at the Hahnemann College of Homeopathy, which was very psychologically oriented, and began to do my own prescribing.

Now about half of my clients are taking homeopathic remedies. It’s not for everyone, and some people need or prefer western medicine. However, I have fewer clients taking psychotropic medication than any therapist I know, and I believe the success of the treatment is at least comparable. I am able to treat nursing mothers with post-partum depression, traumatized children, older adults who are sensitive to medication, and I don’t have to worry about the side effects!

Indian government suggests homoeopathic H1N1 preventive, Arsenic Album 30

The union health ministry recommended preventive homeopathy medicine, Arsenicum album 30. The decision to advise people to take the preventive medicine was taken after the Central Council for Research in Homeopathy (CCRH), a state-run research wing, gave the suggestion for curbing the spread of the diseases.

"It has recommended one doze of the medicine daily on empty stomach for three days. The dose should be repeated after one month by following the same schedule in case flu like conditions prevail in the area," the ministry said in a statement.

Top Indian homoeopaths say H1N1 (swine flu) curable with homoeopathy

The Indian Department of AYUSH (alternative systems) has released a press note suggesting use of Arsenic alba 30 one dose for three consecutive days as preventive for Swine flu.

It has the approval of Director General Health Services and Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.

This has come after a study by Experts of "Genus Epidemicus" (Common symptoms of suffering patients vis a vis the repetorised drug). In this study Arsenic alba covered 80% of the symptoms.

Regarding exploring the scope of homeopathy, homeopathic medicines in H1N1 virus (swine flu) prevention and treatment, Dr. Anil Singhal, MD (Homeo), a homeopathic physician and consultant in Gurgaon, near New Delhi proposed guidelines related to:

- prevention (a genus epidemicus with symptoms from H1N1 patients)
- prevention with nosode (prepare H1N1 influenzinum)
- post influenza treatment (follow-ups to note any effects, and to prevent any chronicity as per miasm theory), and other similar aspects.

Homeopathy is the second most popular medicine in the world. However, most people really do not know too much about Homeopathy. This article will help clear up some misconceptions associated with homeopathic medicine.

1) Homeopathic medicines are nothing more than sugar pill that contain no measurable substance.

Certain homeopathic medicines have no measurable substance. However, many remedies do have measurable substances. In medicine that is 24X or 12C has no measurable substance. However, some medicine potencies such as 6X, 6C, 12X will have a measurable substance.

2) Homeopathy has never been successful in large scale well designed trials. Trials have only worked when homeopaths were doing the trials or poorly designed trials with quite a bit of author’s bias.

Trials in Homeopathy is a very mixed bag. Sometimes people are looking at the wrong information source. Many skeptics will take successful trials and point out that when looking at larger trials in the study, homeopathy does not seem to work. Although, the conclusions of the authors were that homeopathy seems to works better than a placebo.

However, some trials that were successful were fairly large. Oscillococcinum trials were quite large and well designed but still yielded a positive result in shortening the flu duration. Similar studies with Osccillococcinum were replicated as well. The idea that homeopathic remedies have never been successful in a large scale well designed trial is not true.

3) Homeopathy should not be used to treat life threatening diseases.

Homeopathy can treat life threatening diseases with the help of a well trained homeopathic physician. Also, the general medical doctor and other specialists involved in treating the disease should be included on the treatment plan. Medical doctors should always be seen if you have a life threatening illness. Homeopathy can not cure all life threatening diseases.

Many people with life threatening diseases have faired well with Homeopathy. Homeopathy malaria trials show that in trials that homeopathic medicine worked as well as conventional medicine in treating people with malaria.

4) Homeopathy and modern medicine can not work together

Homeopathy can be quite complementary to modern medicine.Many patients under going chemotherapy have seen their side effects reduced when taking homeopathic remedies. Trials with reduction of cancer treatments provided encouraging results.

5) Homeopathy, Herbal, and Ayurvedic medicine are similar.

Homeopathy, Herbal and Ayurvedic are forms of alternative medicine but these forms of medicine are not similar in any other way. Homeopathy use diluted substances to treat patients. Every medicine has been diluted in water or alcohol.

Herbal medicine is medicine based on the use of plants. Ayurvedic is an ancient system of medicine started in India that operates with the theory that all materials of vegetable, animal, and mineral origin have some medicinal value.

Ayurvedic use these materials to treat patients. Ayurvedic and homeopathic medicines are used quite a bit in India so that creates some confusion in people thinking they are the same thing.

6) Homeopathy is slow to work

Acute conditions such as flu, colds, motion sickness and pain relief can be treated quickly using homeopathic medicines. Chronic conditions are slow to work because they are complicated to treat. Chronic conditions would be acne, eczema, irritable bowel syndrome and other conditions will take longer to treat.

7) Homeopathy is only for human use.

Actually, petmeds is one of the fastest growing use of homeopathic products. Homeopathy offers a safe and inexpensive way to treat your pet of acute conditions such as allergies, anxiety and joint stress relief.

8) You can get a book on Homeopathy and treat yourself.

This may be the case in acute conditions such as cold and flu. However, more complicated and chronic cases will require you to see a homeopathic doctor. Chronic cases involve generally taking quite a few remedies in the course of a treatment. A book can not tell you which homeopathic remedies to take and how much to take when your condition starts to improve or worsen.

9) Homeopathic remedies are not widely available.

This may have been true a few years ago. However, many remedies can be found pretty much all over the US. Walmart, CVS Pharmacy, Target and larger retailers carry combination homeopathic remedies for acute conditions such as cold and flu and insomnia.

Single remedies which homeopaths claim to work the best are not as readily available. These remedies can be found in health food stores, natural pharmacies or on the Internet. They are more specialized and generally most people taking simgle remedies have some homeopathic knowledge or a doctor has prescribed that medicine.

10) All homeopathic remedies work the same on all people.

Homeopathy works different on different people. Classical homeopathy treats different individuals with different remedies according to their personality type. One person may use one remedy to treat a illness, while another person would use a different remedy to treat the same illness.

Homeopathy assumes everyone is different so using the same remedy to treat everyone will not work according to Classical Homeopathy principals. Modern medicine generally gives everyone the same medicine for general conditions.

Indian homoeopath treats AIDS boy patient

A veteran homoeopath has offered to provide free treatment to HIV positive boy Anshu. The plight of Anshu came to light last month when he and his healthy siblings were asked to leave school at Balamundi village in Jasra block of Allahabad district.

The school was forced to taken them back after a public outcry. Dr R.K. Kapoor made the offer following the news report 'Little warriors bolster boy's HIV battle'.

It was published in HT on September 2. Dr Kapoor is former chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Central Council of Research in Homeopathy under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

"There is a likelihood of homoeopathic treatment completely curing the boy at this stage of the disease," says Dr Kapoor, who has recently written a book 'Control AIDS through Homoeopathy'. Dr Kapoor is not in favour of Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) for the child.

But homoeopathic treatment can come to his rescue, he emphasises.They highlighted the importance of accepting Anshu and his siblings back into society.

The bal panchayat members also had a meal with Anshu to convey the message that AIDS did not spread by mere touch or eating together. They also motivated Anshu to participate in the story-telling and poetry sessions that followed the bal panchayat.

H1N1 vaccine fearred. Arizona Homoeopath says H1N1 vaccine not necessary

While many people fear a more vicious strain of novel swine flu this fall, others are panicking about the vaccine itself.

An action letter posted on the Internet and signed by 57 people, including religious leaders and holistic medical practitioners, says the swine flu vaccines have been insufficiently tested and could have dangerous consequences on public health. Among those who signed the letter are Dr. Gabriel Cousens of the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center, southwest of Tucson.

The letter talks about the possibility of forced quarantines and mandatory vaccines that are toxic. Rather than an immunization, the letter suggests vitamin supplements, herbs, immune-building medicinal mushrooms, a healthful diet and oxygenation therapies, among other things.
"An uninformed public without adequate compensation for damages, loss of property, life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness required under the U.S. Constitution is not really acting with choice," the letter says.

Swine flu, also known as the H1N1 flu, never really went away, and some cases already have been confirmed on the University of Arizona campus this semester. But it is expected to hit in a second "wave" in the Western Hemisphere during the fall. While its return could be mild, there's concern that it could mutate into something more virulent.

Public-health officials are encouraging people to get two vaccinations this influenza season — one against the regular seasonal flu and another against the H1N1 virus.

Federal, state and local health officials stress that the vaccine is optional and that it will not be administered without rigorous testing.

Dr. Michelle McDonald, who is Pima County's chief medical officer, said not everyone will even need the vaccine. She added that she understands why pregnant women, even though they are at high risk, would carefully consider getting it.

"One hundred percent of people will not want it. We are encouraging it for high-risk groups," McDonald said. "Clearly there is a disproportionate risk for pregnant women, but I don't think anyone facing that decision is going to have every bit of information."

McDonald said the development of an H1N1 vaccine uses the same processes that have been used for years to manufacture the seasonal flu immunizations.

"I can't imagine if it was dangerous in the clinical trials that they'd go ahead with it," McDonald said.

In light of the swine flu anxiety, seasonal-flu shots at many locations, including Walgreens, began last week, about a month earlier than usual. The H1N1 vaccine isn't expected to be available until October.

The H1N1 vaccine, which could consist of two shots, is expected to be rolled out first to higher-risk populations. That includes children ages 6 months to 5 years, kids with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, pregnant women, caregivers of infants, and health-care workers in direct patient care.

The general population likely won't be able to get the vaccine until December or January, Arizona Department of Public Health officials have said.

Some of those questioning the vaccine, including Cousens, are homeopathic physicians. Homeopathy is a form of alternative medicine with a holistic approach. Arizona's licensed homeopathic physicians are trained allopathic (M.D.) and osteopathic (D.O.) physicians who have completed additional training in homeopathy and other forms of diagnosis and treatment.
Cousens, who declined an interview request with the Star, founded The Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center in Patagonia. It espouses a raw-food diet and "spiritual fasting" that Cousens has said is part of awakening people to the spirit of God.

Other signers of the action letter include Dr. Bruce H. Shelton, a Phoenix-based homeopathic physician who is president of the Arizona Homeopathic and Integrative Medical Association.
"Personally, I have other things I do homeopathically to boost my immune system," said Shelton, who has not received a flu shot since the 1970s. "You want to keep yourself healthy so that you don't get it (the swine flu)."

The letter says the vaccine will do little, if anything, to prevent or minimize the flu. It also says the vaccines will contain thimerosal, which is a form of mercury.

In addition to reiterating that the vaccine will be optional, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that while the threat of danger from thimerosal is small, it is producing vaccines for both the seasonal and the novel H1N1 virus that do not contain it.

Still, New York-based internist Dr. Erika Schwartz said she won't be recommending the novel H1N1 vaccines to her patients.

"We have no reason to believe the swine flu is anything more than a bad cold," said Schwartz, who is also medical director for Cinergy Health, a Florida-based health-insurance provider that enrolls about 40,000 families. "The number of people who died is really limited, and the number of people who were really sickened is limited."

So far, the World Health Organization reports that nearly 3,000 people have died from the H1N1 flu virus, 593 of them in the United States. In Arizona, that number is 19, including two in Pima County.

The regular, seasonal flu kills about 36,000 Americans each year.

Homoeopathy useful in poultry industry. Treats feather pecking

An alternative approach to treating disease based on feather analysis is proving successful against chronic problems in free-range egg flocks.

Producers spend a great deal of time and money on keeping their flocks healthy, but conventional methods of diagnosis and treatment are not always 100% successful and problems can keep recurring.

Low egg weights and red mite infestation are just two examples of chronic cases, where veterinary intervention may not give satisfactory results. That is why a growing number of poultry managers are investigating alternative treatments.

Crossgates Bioenergetics was set up a decade ago by Julie Dodgson, a farmer's wife who turned to alternative remedies, after conventional treatments failed to alleviate her symptoms during a bout of ill health.

Convinced of the potential for using homeopathic remedies to prevent and treat a range of ailments, she started by offering a service for farm livestock. The business now employs 16 staff and has since extended its client list, to include human remedies and treatments for administration by horse and dog owners.

The firm's avian manager, Chris Riley describes bioenergetics as a "gentle system of healthcare that assists the body's in built defence mechanism to heal itself." It relies on the principle that when a bird is ill, its system is thrown out of balance. Strengthening immunity and correcting the imbalance - using an appropriate remedy - allows the body to heal itself, he says.

His main recommendation is to pick up warning signs at an early stage, a process that involves the monthly analysis of feather samples. These are sent through the post by the producer to the company's headquarters in Settle, North Yorkshire. The average sample will either contain feathers from around 20-30 birds per laying shed, or from a selection of birds which appear noticeably off-colour.

The sample pack is placed in a computerised "energetic test" machine. It runs through more than 200 categories, including bacteria, virus, parasites, toxins, fungi, nutritional, respiratory, urinary, digestive and reproductive systems.

"Each category contains a unique frequency that is detected by a biofeedback response between the machine and the feathers," explains Mr Riley. "The testing produces highly specific results, so it is particularly helpful in cases where there is no obvious explanation for a general reduction in productivity.

"Our remedies can be applied in conjunction with veterinary medicines. In some instances, the two treatments used side by side can complement each other. If birds have been prescribed antibiotics by the vet, we would recommend dosing the birds with a probiotic mixture. This will encourage the level of beneficial bacteria in the gut and help in times of stress."

Mr Riley points out that no side effects or withdrawal periods are associated with using the remedies. They cover a wide range of poultry health issues, including low body or egg weights, red mite infestation, and feather or vent pecking.

All the remedies produced by Crossgates are in liquid form, administered via the header tank or fresh water drinkers. Rates and frequency of application are based on the type and size of flock, as well as the problem being addressed.

General combination remedies are offered alongside solutions for specific health problems. One example of a general preventative treatment is the Chick Health Remedy. It is designed to help the birds to tolerate the vaccines and sprays they receive in the first 16 weeks of life. It is recommended that the remedy is used from day old until 14 days, although it can be administered any time up to 16 weeks, depending on flock start dates, says Mr Riley.

Case study: Brian Robson, North Yorkshire

Organic free-range egg producer, Brian Robson has been using bioenergetic remedies from Crossgates for the past four years at Foxhall Farm, near Thirsk in North Yorkshire. All the eggs are sold to Waitrose.

Having set up in production six years ago, Mr Robson's first flock was already in full lay, when he attended an organic producers' meeting and learned that homeopathy and bioenergetics could be used on hens. At the time, vent pecking was causing such a problem in the 2000-strong flock that mortality was averaging around 18%.

Half way through the management of the next flock, Mr Robson posted off a sample of feathers to Crossgates. Avian Health plus Feathercare was prescribed, having been designed to correct an amino acid imbalance that had been uncovered.

The story of a Philippines Homoeopath, Dr. Hubero

Homeopathy, according to Answers.com, “is a holistic system of treatment that originated in the late eighteenth century. The name homeopathy is derived from two Greek words that mean “like disease.” The system is based on the idea that substances that produce symptoms of sickness in healthy people will have a curative effect when given in very dilute quantities to sick people who exhibit those same symptoms. Homeopathic remedies are believed to stimulate the body’s own healing processes.

Homeopaths use the term “allopathy,” or “different than disease,” to describe the use of drugs used in conventional medicine to oppose or counteract the symptom being treated. Homeopathy was founded by German physician Samuel Hahnemann (1755–1843), who was much disturbed by the medical system of his time, believing that its cures were crude and some of its strong drugs and treatments did more harm than good to patients. Hahnemann performed experiments on himself using Peruvian bark, which contains quinine, a malaria remedy. He concluded that in a healthy person, quinine creates the same symptoms as malaria, including fevers and chills, which is the reason why it is effective as a remedy. He then began to analyze the remedies available in nature by what he called provings.

Provings of homeopathic remedies are still compiled by dosing healthy adults with various substances and documenting the results, in terms of the dose needed to produce the symptoms and the length of the dose’s effectiveness.”

Dr. Elmer Hubero is a doctor of medicine, having been graduated from the University of Santo Tomas in 1972. He became Guimaras’ municipal health officer as well as engaged in pediatrics. However, after 30 years of allophatic medical practice, Dr. Hubero tried homeopathy.

“I enrolled in a long distance course in homeopathy. A year later, I took the exam for each module and gained my certificate from the British Institute of Homeopathy in 2000. I practiced this medicine in 2002,” he said.

Lacking in confidence yet determined to push through, Dr. Hubero tried the medicine on his family and found that it was effective. “This led me to shift to practicing homeopathic medicine completely,” he added.

So far his practice has gained strong belief from the public, with two to five patients a day. Since 2002, the number of his patients has reached 9,065. He holds clinic for seven days a week, from 6-7 AM and 5-7 PM in Pavia. If he’s not busy with his clinic, he teaches at the medical school of West Visayas State University.

Dr. Hubero’s medicines vary. The medicines are available as white globules, water-based and drops. Although the medicines may look similar, the dilution and content are different, depending on Dr. Hubero’s desired treatment for the patient. “The symptoms for each patient is complex, thus the difference in the dilution and strength of the tincture I apply,” he said.

Like doctors engaging in allopathic medicine, Dr. Hubero also asks his patients to undergo laboratory exams. Over 5 million French people and over $20 million dollars is spent on a little known but much used homeopathic remedy to treat the flu. Homeopathy has recently become Europe’s fastest growing form of alternative medicine. Last year sales of homeopathic medicines in Europe topped £3billion.

Debate about how it scientifically works are heated but most Europeans are now going to a homeopath as their first course of treatment and 20 per cent of Scottish GPs currently practice this medicine. Many scientific studies have been carried out that proves its efficacy medically and especially in flu outbreaks like this swine flu H1N1.

This medicine could be the natural solution for the epidemic. No nasty chemicals and it reduces the flu symptoms by three days in comparison to a vaccine that has not been tested and will take up to six weeks to create an effect. Most importantly this remedy could help regulate the deadly ‘cytokine storm’ effect of this flu.

Oscillococcinum was first studied in France during the 1987 flu epidemic caused by an H1N1 virus similar to the swine flu of today. This multi-centre study examined the effect of Oscillococcinum (200C) on the early symptoms of flu. Results were published in the peer-reviewed British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. More patients in the treatment group recovered completely in the first 48 hours than the control group (17 percent of patients with active treatment compared to 10 percent of controls). More patients in the treatment group also judged the treatment as better compared to the placebo, 61 percent vs 49 percent.

In 1990 German scientists replicated the French study of Oscillococcinum. They used the same criteria as the previous study. After 48 hours of treatment with Oscillococcinum the treatment group had considerably milder symptoms than the control group, and the number of patients with no symptoms from day two onward was significantly greater in the treatment group 17.4 % compared to the control group 6.6 %.

Both of these studies show a significant curative effect of a homeopathic medicine in the treatment of flu in carefully conducted, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials. Conventional antiviral drugs reduce the duration of flu by about one day if taken within the first 48 hours of illness. These studies shows that homeopathy carries the potential to make a dramatic difference in any flu epidemic without the risk of drug side effects. Some of those drugs have now been linked to heart problems and do not address the ‘cytokine storm’ of this swine flu H1N1.

Private European insurers cover homeopathic treatments and The World Health Organisation recommends them. A few years ago Spain took an initiative to incorporate homeopathy into its national health service. There are over 250,000 homeopaths in India.

WHO speaks against Homoeopathy: Is it justified?

The WHO (World Health Organisation) recently advised against using Homoeopathy to treat diseases like AIDS, TB, child diarrhoea, influenza.

Who runs the WHO? Who staffs it? Allopathic doctors. Allopathy has always derided Homoeopathy because from the 12c potency onwards of a Homoeopathic drug no trace of the medicinal substance can be seen (even with a microscope). So they say Homoeopathy is humbug.

I will not dwell on the vested interests who are out to defame and belittle Homoeopathy. I have already done so in an earlier article.

What I want to say to those esteemed ladies and gentlemen at the WHO and Voice of Young Science Network is that Homoeopathy too is a proven science. It is not some kind of faith healing. All the Homoeopathic remedies have been 'proved'; They have been administered to human volunteers and the the symptoms elicited from them have been carefully recorded. This is the Homoeopathic materia medica.

It is common sense that a system of cure that has survived 200 years and is growing in popularity by the day can never be nonsense or quackery.

Homoeopathy has been greatly undermined in the USA because of the sustained campaign by vested interests. A similar attempt is underway in Britain. And the WHO advice is to make the 'kill Homoeopathy' campaign a global one.

We appeal to the honest doctors at the WHO and Voice of Young Science Network to at least read some books by the masters of Homoeopathy and then say anything about it. Judging Homoeopathy by the yardstick of 'seeing and observing' is unfair. It took a generation to understand the real genius of Albert Einstein. With Homeopathy, it seems, it is going to take several of them.

WHO is an esteemed body and when it says something, people the world over listen carefully. This advisory has dealt a blow to the reputation of Homoeopathy. How pained the masters like Hahnemann, Boeninghausen, Lippe, Hering, Kent, Nash, Farrington, Clarke, Tyler would have been at this sorry state of affairs.

Now is the time to act. I appeal to all lovers of Homoeopathy (who understand its greatness) to write in their views. We have to build public opinion FOR homoeopathy. We cannot let people who do not understand Homoeopathy to undermine it.

WHO advice against Homoeopathy: Another attempt to discredit the great system of cure

People with conditions such as HIV, TB and malaria should not rely on homeopathic treatments, the World Health Organization has warned.

It was responding to calls from young researchers who fear the promotion of homeopathy in the developing world could put people's lives at risk.

The group Voice of Young Science Network has written to health ministers to set out the WHO view.

However practitioners said there were areas where homeopathy could help.

In a letter to the WHO in June, the medics from the UK and Africa said: "We are calling on the WHO to condemn the promotion of homeopathy for treating TB, infant diarrhoea, influenza, malaria and HIV.

"Homeopathy does not protect people from, or treat, these diseases.

"Those of us working with the most rural and impoverished people of the world already struggle to deliver the medical help that is needed.

"When homeopathy stands in place of effective treatment, lives are lost."

Dr Robert Hagan is a researcher in biomolecular science at the University of St Andrews and a member of Voice of Young Science Network, which is part of the charity Sense About Science campaigning for "evidence-based" care.

He said: "We need governments around the world to recognise the dangers of promoting homeopathy for life-threatening illnesses.

"We hope that by raising awareness of the WHO's position on homeopathy we will be supporting those people who are taking a stand against these potentially disastrous practices."

'No evidence'

Dr Mario Raviglione, director of the Stop TB department at the WHO, said: "Our evidence-based WHO TB treatment/management guidelines, as well as the International Standards of Tuberculosis Care do not recommend use of homeopathy."

The doctors had also complained that homeopathy was being promoted as a treatment for diarrhoea in children.

But a spokesman for the WHO department of child and adolescent health and development said: "We have found no evidence to date that homeopathy would bring any benefit.

"Homeopathy does not focus on the treatment and prevention of dehydration - in total contradiction with the scientific basis and our recommendations for the management of diarrhoea."

Dr Nick Beeching, a specialist in infectious diseases at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, said: "Infections such as malaria, HIV and tuberculosis all have a high mortality rate but can usually be controlled or cured by a variety of proven treatments, for which there is ample experience and scientific trial data.

"There is no objective evidence that homeopathy has any effect on these infections, and I think it is irresponsible for a healthcare worker to promote the use of homeopathy in place of proven treatment for any life-threatening illness."

Homework

However Paula Ross, chief executive of the Society of Homeopaths, said it was right to raise concerns about promotion of homeopathy as a cure for TB, malaria or HIV and Aids.

But she added: "This is just another poorly wrapped attempt to discredit homeopathy by Sense About Science.

"The irony is that in their efforts to promote evidence in medicine, they have failed to do their own homework.

"There is a strong and growing evidence base for homeopathy and most notably, this also includes childhood diarrhoea."

The UK's Faculty of Homeopathy added that there was also evidence homeopathy could help people with seasonal flu.

Dr Sara Eames, president of the faculty, said people should not be deprived of effective conventional medicines for serious disease.

But she added: "Millions die each year as those affected have no access to these drugs.

"It therefore seems reasonable to consider what beneficial role homeopathy could play. What is needed is further research and investment into homeopathy."

• Rhus Toxicodendron. Derived from poison ivy leaves, Rhus Tox has been used medicinally since the 18th century. It is primarily used for aching and stiffness related to rheumatism, osteoarthritis, sprains and strains.

• Bryonia Alba. From the root of the white bryony, Bryonia is effective for inflammation in the lining of the joints, as well as osteoarthritis and rheumatism with joints that are painfully hot and swollen.

With fibroids, there are three remedies which are sometimes recommended.

Rocco Rubini 1805? - 1886? MD was an Italian orthodox physician who converted to homeopathy, to become the Medical Director of the Homeopathic Hospital of Saint Maria della Cesarea in Naples, and the Physician of the Count of Syracuse,

Rubini successfully treated Frances Bryant, the wife of William Cullen Bryant, in Naples in 1856.

In 1854, Rubini received a note of thanks from Commandante Filippo Rucci of the Royal Hospice, thanking him for the lives of 200 inmates, who survived the cholera under homeopathic treatment.

The mortality rate for the homeopathic treatment was 8%, for the allopathic treatment 53%. The camphor tincture became known as “Rubini’s Camphor.”

Rocco Rubinia was a distinguished pioneer of Italian Homeopathy. Frederick Hervey Foster Quin, in 1834, tells us that he was practising at Teramo. Dadea says that in 1832 he went into the province of Teramo, where Homeopathy was held in great esteem on account of what had been accomplished by other physicians and veterinary surgeons, and by the pharmacist Crocetti di Mosciano, a distinguished botanist, who founded a homeopathic laboratory which attained a great reputation.

After having been engaged for eight years with his worthy colleagues in extending the field of Homeopathy in this province, Rubini returned to Naples and took up his residence there. In that city his enthusiastic devotion to the new science, his energetic efforts in its cause, and a Highly successful practice, procured him much renown, and in 1850 he was appointed physician to His Royal Highness, the Count of Syracuse.

The influence of Dr. Rubini with this prince was of great advantage to the cause of Homeopathy in this region. Through the intercession of the prince permission was obtained from the Neapolitan government for the establishment of a specific Homeopathic pharmacy, which opened in August. 1852. It was called the Dragon Pharmacy.

This institution was of great service in affording proofs of the unfounded nature of the allegations brought by allopaths, and was an effectual answer to the ridicule they sought to heal upon the new doctrines. It did much to establish Homeopathy yet more firmly throughout the kingdom, and formed a precedent in its legislation which was to produce important results.

In 1854 Rubini was invited to undertake the superintendence of the Royal Hospital for the Poor. It happened that an infirmarian, to whom he had confided the ditty of administering camphor during the first stages of cholera, reserving to himself the privilege of prescribing for the subsequent stages, found on his hands a grave case of the disease, and during the absence of the doctor, being without further instructions, he continued to give camphor until finally the patient became well.

Another very grave case was accordingly treated by the doctor in the same way camphor being used both externally and internally, and the result was again favorable. These two facts he considered as tending to prove that camphor could safely be prescribed in any stage of cholera.

Encouraged by this experience, he made use of no other remedy in the epidemics of 1854, 1855 and 1865, and out of 448 cases which came under his hands in every case the patient was cured.

Out of 255 cases treated by others in the same manner in Naples and in the Abruzzi provinces, only two deaths are recorded. Of those cured by him in 1854 and 1855, fifteen were in an algid condition. The cases of cholera sicca were not few; seven were accompanied with epileptic convulsions.

The camphor was prepared by alcoholic solution in equal parts with highly rectified spirits: the dose was five drops, at times twenty or thirty drops, given every five urinates on a piece of sugar. The spirits were rubbed over the whole body, eight pounds being once employed in a desperate case and were also injected; as preservative, they were administered in doses of five drops three or four times a day.

These facts are given in full by Rubini, and are proved by documents, whose authenticity and correctness have in but few cases been denied, in a work which he republished several times, each edition being enriched by the addition of new facts. The book was entitled Statistica dei colerici curati omiopaticamente in Napoli and on the strength of these facts he claimed from the Academy of France the Breant premium.

These statements were denied in the Allg. hom. Zeitung, Volume 75, page 136, and Dr. Rubini’s, answer with affidavits may be found in the same volume, page 159.

The French Academy refused to recognize Dr. Rubini’s cures or to award a premium; in Italy the government refused to avail itself of his services, which he offered gratuitously whenever the cholera broke out. It was not till 1866 that he could obtain any recognition of his merits.

In this year he was appointed to take charge of the Cholera Hospital of Foggia; but owing to the savage intolerance of the allopaths on one hand and the weakness of the authorities on the other the appointment was rendered futile.

The prefect of Foggia, intimidated by the threats of the old school of physicians, received him courteously and conducted him over the whole province; but neither at Foggia, nor at San Severo, nor at Alpicena, where the epidemic was raging most violently, did he permit him to prescribe for a single case of cholera.

In May, 1860, he was appointed to the clinical direction of the small hospital called the Spedale della Cesarea, which is under the charge of the Board of Managers for the Royal Hospital of the Poor. This office he held for three years and a half. The managers not being able to provide the necessary funds, Rubini defrayed out of his own purse the expenses necessary for cleaning the walls of the hospital, for renewing the pavements, supplying the beds with linen, etc.

During this period four hundred and fifty patients were restored to health, and six died, under his treatment; while during the three previous years, when the hospital was in allopathic hands, out of four hundred and forty eight patients the deaths were twenty nine.

A certain allopathic physician, of the name of Ciccone, being appointed Superintendent of the Royal Hospital of the Poor, Rubini of course found it impossible to retain his position any longer, and, notwithstanding the money he had disbursed and the success attending his treatment, he was obliged to renounce the hopes he had formed of continuing to demonstrate in that hospital the superiority of Homeopathic methods.

Another circumstance to which Rubini owes his enduring celebrity is the pure experiment he made about this time with the Cactus Grandiflorus. The Cactus Grandiflorus published by him in 1864 has been translated into all the languages, and at present forms a valuable part of every treatise of pure Materia Medica and of therapeutics.

As the only surviving member of the noble band of standard bearers in the cause of Homeopathy in Italy, Dr. Rocco Rubini, notwithstanding the obstacles in his path, continued with a youthful ardor to do all in his power to advance the interests of the science in whose name he had combatted for fifty years the enemies aroused against it.

When Rubini returned to Naples in 1840, the physicians practicing Homeopathy in that city hardly exceeded half a dozen. At the meeting of the World’s Homeopathic Convention of 1876, held in Philadelphia, Carroll Dunham, in his Presidential Address, spoke of Dr. Rubini, saying that he had sent to him letters of Samuel Hahnemann and some statements of the camphor cure of cholera. He also sent a number of copies of his book. Statistica dei colerici curati omiopaticamente in Napoli. These books were distributed free to the members of the World’s Convention. (World’s Con. Volume 2, page 1087).

Rubini wrote Statistica dei colerici curati omiopaticamente in Napoli, and Cactus Grandiflorus, following the publication of its proving in the British Journal of Homeopathy, and the American Homeopathic Observer in 1864, and in the American Homeopathist in 1865.

What is DVT? Symptoms

Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, is a blood clot that forms in a vein deep in the body. Most deep vein clots occur in the lower leg or thigh. If the vein swells, the condition is called thrombophlebitis. A deep vein thrombosis can break loose and cause a serious problem in the lung, called a pulmonary embolism, or a heart attack or stroke.

Sitting still for a long time can make you more likely to get a DVT. Some medicines and disorders that increase your risk for blood clots can also lead to DVTs. Common symptoms are

* Warmth and tenderness over the vein
* Pain or swelling in the part of the body affected
* Skin redness

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is the formation of a blood clot in one of the deeply situated veins of the body. The condition commonly affects the veins of the leg (such as the femoral vein or the popliteal vein) or the deep veins of the pelvis. Usually, small blood clots do not produce any symptoms as the body is able to gradually break them down, without any immediate or long-term effects. Larger clots can partly or completely block the blood flow in the vein and cause symptoms such as swelling of the affected leg, pain and tenderness, and redness of the overlying skin. If the DVT persists in the vein, it can lead to a number of complications, including inflammation of the vein (phlebitis) and leg ulcers. DVT in the thigh carries a risk of pulmonary embolism. This occurs when the clot, detaches itself from the inside of the vein, leaves the leg, and lodges in the pulmonary artery, the main blood vessel to the lungs. If the clot is large enough, it can completely block that artery and cause death.

British Homoeopaths fight back over WHO thumbs down to Homoeopathy

Homeopathic remedies can work side-by-side conventional medicines in treating some of the world’s deadliest diseases, claims an expert in the field.

Uli Holzer, co-founder of the new Southern College of Homeopathy in Tonbridge, says she disagrees with the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s view that the controversial treatment cannot help sufferers of HIV, malaria, TB or influenza.

The WHO was responding to a letter from the Voice of Young Science Network, a groups of African and UK medics, which says homeopathy is putting people’s lives at risk – particularly in the developing world.

One of its members told the BBC: “We need governments around the world to recognise the dangers of promoting homeopathy for life-threatening illnesses.

“We hope that by raising awareness of the WHO’s position on homeopathy we will be supporting those people who are taking a stand against these potentially disastrous practices.”

Before becoming a homeopath, trained nurse Mrs Holzer worked for 15 years in the intensive care department of a German hospital.

She told Kent on Sunday her experiences have enabled her to see the benefits of both conventional medicines and holistic remedies, adding that different people responded better to the latter than others.

“If I caught a serious illness then I would probably start with homeopathy, but if I didn’t get anywhere then I would probably seek medical attention as well,” she said.

“I do think it’s important that people are aware of their limits though and understand that there is no guarantee a homeopathic remedy will work for them.

“They also need to understand there is a difference between treating people and curing them.

“Obviously you would need medical attention if you suffered a broken bone or had a heart attack, but conventional medicine has its limits too when it comes to illnesses and conditions like arthritis.

“I would never advise a patient to avoid taking certain medicines but I think it’s important people have a choice.

“There’s no reason why they can’t use conventional techniques and homeopathic remedies together.”

Homeopathy is a system of medicine based on treating the individual with highly-diluted substances given in mainly tablet form, which those who practice it say triggers the body’s natural system of healing.

It works on the principle that a substance that might cause symptoms in a healthy person is used to cure those same symptoms in illness.

For example, one remedy which might be used in a person suffering from insomnia is coffea – a remedy made from coffee.

But the remedies are often so greatly diluted they contain few or no active ingredients, but homeopaths argue the water has a ‘memory’ of the active ingredient.

The treatment is highly controversial with many conventional doctors, who point to scientific studies dismissing homeopathy’s claims.

Mrs Holzer and two other local homeopaths set up the Southern College of Homeopathy – which has an open day on September 5 – to train new homeopaths and increase use of the practice throughout the UK.

She said: “It’s getting more popular because it’s all natural and there is no toxicity in the remedies we provide. I think the use of homeopathy will continue to grow.”

The Santa Monica Homeopathic Pharmacy has been in business within three blocks of its current location on Broadway since 1944. It offers free consultations with homeopaths, herbalists, nutritionists, naturopaths and other staff. They can't legally diagnose anyone, but they can tell people their options and make recommendations.

"This place is unbelievable," said customer Mitzy Robinson, who lives in Beverly Hills. "They are all bright and helpful. They care — that's important."

As the debate over health care reform rages on, little has been said about homeopathic medicine, much of which isn't covered by traditional insurance plans. Even with an economy struggling and consumer confidence shattered, there are Santa Monicans who are willing to pay out of pocket for their non-Western remedies. Why? Some do not believe drugs are the answer while others feel investing now in their health will cut down costs in the long run, keeping them out of the doctor's office.

"We try to get down to the root of the problem," said Kristin Rotblatt, an acupuncturist who works at the pharmacy, contrasting holistic care with Western medicine's palliative remedies. "We pick up on things doctors no longer remember to ask about because their whole idea is what drug will repress what symptom."

The basic tenant of homeopathy is that a small dose of whatever is causing a symptom to appear can actually solve the problem. Son of the original founders and current co-owner Bob Litvak gave the example of arsenic as a remedy for food poisoning.

He stressed homeopathy's non-invasive qualities.

"It's safe for infants, children, nursing mothers — anyone," he said.

Litvak said holistic medicine's real rise in popularity began about 20 years ago, as the public became more aware of options available outside Western medicine.

"It's definitely a trend that's spreading," Litvak said.

Curing diseases of animals (pets too) with Homoeopathy

One of the best sources available to animal companions for the administration of homeopathic remedies is CJ Puotinen's book "The Encyclopedia of Natural Pet Care".

"Homeopathic drugs are available in powders, tablets, pellets and liquids. Check the product label for exact dosages....

Homeopathic dosages are not adjusted for the type, size, weight or age of the patient as they are in allopathic medicine and herbology. In homeopathy, it is not the size of the dose that matters, but rather its potency (strength) and the frequency if application. In most cases, as soon as the symptoms improve, the treatment is discontinued, for homeopathy works by stimulating the body's own healing processes.

Everything that touches the remedy should be scrupulously clean, dry and at room temperature.

If your pet will accept them this way, give tablets or pellets whole by placing them in his or her mouth from a paper cup, spoon, dispenser cap or a small sheet of paper curved to act as a funnel. Slide, pour, drop or lightly toss the tablets or pellets onto your pets tongue, or place the tablet or pellets on a clean paper towel or sheet of paper held in your hand or set on the floor and let your pet help himself.

If your pet resists whole tablets or pellets you can make them easier to swallow. To crush tablets or pellets, place them inside a folded previously unused heavy paper, such as a folded manila envelope or a sheet of paper folded in half and in half again. Holding the paper flat on a counter top or other hard surface, tap the tablet or pellets with the base of a cup or glass until crushed. Pour the crushed powder down the paper's fold line into the animal's mouth, let your pet lick it off or transfer the powder to a small piece of paper shaped into a funnel and dispense it from that. If some of the powder spills, don't worry. Whatever your pet swallows will have the therapeutic effect.

To make a pill or powder easier to dispense, you can dissolve it in a distilled, filtered or spring water, preferably in a glass or clear (not opaque) plastic bottle. Do this by placing the tablet, pellets or crushed powder in a glass.....add a teaspoon to a tablespoon of water, and the material will begin to dissolve. Stir gently with a clean spoon.

To dispense the liquid, pour it directly into your pet's mouth or use an eye-dropper to squirt it onto the tongue or between the lip and gum line. After transferring all or most of the liquid, rinse the eyedropper before using it again.

If your pet isn't happy with these methods, you can pour it into a dish or his or her water bowl, though if your pet doesn't drink it all at once, it shouldn't be left where other pets might consume it.

The recent ongoing virulent and insidious campaign against Homoeopathy let loose in the British media is shocking. Almost everyday some new story or the other appears which denigrates Homoeopathy. Many in Britain have an objection to the Royal family believing and using Homoeopathic medicines.

I think the source of this campaign lies in the multi-billion (or is it trillion?) allopathic drug industry. Homoeopathy is a safe, gentle and inexpensive system of cure. No big drug companies and their ubiquitous suave, aggressive sales executives here.

If the general public begins to become aware of the harm of many allopathic drugs (the allopathic treatment of cancer is barbaric) cause and in contrast of the the gentle cure brought about by Homoeopathy; the fat profits of these drug companies would begin to shrink.

Hence this campaign to defame Homoeopathy in Britain. Homoeopathy has already been discredited and rendered insignificant in the United States. The next target countries are Britain and then India; these being the two strongholds of Homoeopathy.

To those taking pot shots at Homoeopathy, I would say: You don't know the ABC of this great system of cure and thus least justified in saying anything against it.

To those who apply 'scientific standards' and say Homoeopathy is not a science, I say this true. Homeopathy is not mere science. It is both an art and rigorously proved science. Judging it with strait-jacketed yardsticks is foolish. It is like saying religion and faith is bunkum because God cannot be seen or heard. I would advice those targeting Homoeopathy to have the courage to go tell that to the Arch Bishop of Canterbury!

I would also like to point out to the misguided ladies and gentlemen that some of the great Homoeopaths the world has seen have come from Britain. John Henry Clarke, Richard Hughes, A C Blackwood and Margaret Lucy Tyler (the author of the classic Homoeopathic Drug Pictures) are names that come readily to one's mind. Were (or are) they all quacks? Blackwood was the Royal Homoeopathic physician to the Queen in the nineteenth century.

I would like to conclude with the words of Mahatma Gandhi. “Homoeopathy cures a larger percentage of cases than any other method of treatment and is beyond doubt safer and more economical and the most complete medical science.”

The allopath views diseases as localizing in various organs and systems, and uses specific drugs to suppress those diseases. The homeopath, while not unconcerned with the localizing pathology, believes the core problem lies in what some call the central disturbance. The central disturbance is a mind-body disorder. In turn it has been caused by the disordered Vital Force, that energy which governs all the body’s systems and all the billions of biochemical reactions. Correct the Vital Force and the central disturbance will diminish, and the organism will begin to heal.

The allopath, being system oriented, sees high blood pressure as related to the renovascular system, colitis to the gastrointestinal system, arthritis to the joints, and so on. So the allopath selects an organ-specific or system-specific drug to suppress the annoying symptoms. He virtually never makes a connection between the patient’s mental state and the pathology.

The homeopath invariably does. The homeopath cringes at the very idea of suppression. Always his therapy is directed toward building up the immune (and other) systems, never in suppressing them.

Because the allopath is organ and system oriented he often prescribes more than one medicine, one for each organ or system affected. The patient with arthritis, high blood pressure, insomnia and anxiety could easily be given aspirin or ibuprofen for the arthritis, a diuretic and antihypertensive for the blood pressure, a barbiturate to sleep and a tranquilizer for anxiety – a total of five drugs for four problems.

The classical homeopath, on the other hand, would treat the same patient with only one medicine at a time intending to stimulate the body’s own natural defenses (immune system, nervous system, endocrine system, etc.) to overcome all of the patient’s problems at the same time.

Homeopathy started about 200 years ago with a discovery by a German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann. Wondering why quinine was useful in treating malaria, he took the medicine himself and found that, when taken by a healthy person, quinine actually produced malaria-like symptoms. When given to a malaria patient, however, it was curative.

Homeopathy means, literally, “To treat with a similar disease.” Its central principle, “like cures like”, contrasts with other medical approaches. The term allopathic, on the other hand, means to “treat with other than the disease” and is used to denote the standard medical approach of today which attempts to counteract symptoms. For example, a patient with diarrhea may be given a drug that slows intestinal mobility.

To better understand how homeopathy works, it helps to consider two aspects of a disease. First, there is the immediate cause such as a bacteria, virus, toxin or internal immunological activity. Second, there is the patient’s response (their reaction and defense) such as fever, inflammation and discharge. These are the body’s attempts to eliminate pathogens and toxins and to heal tissue. While homeopaths do not ignore immediate causes, such as infection, their primary focus is on the patient’s attempts to respond and heal. Their aim is to strengthen the patient’s defenses and shift the balance in favor of recovery.

Dr. Hahnemann found that substances could be used to stimulate healing by applying the principle of “like cures like” in very specific ways. He would give the patient a substance that would gently nudge their system in the direction of the “disease”, reproducing the same (or almost the same) syndrome or whole set of particular symptoms in a mild form. He found this to be a very effective way to stimulate their natural defenses. It was almost as if the patient’s defenses could not distinguish between what the natural disease and what the similar substance was doing. Thus, homeopaths fine-tune the use of medicines to enhance the patient’s own attempts to overcome illness or disease.

In this manner, homeopathy employs hundreds of substances that have all been thoroughly studied as to their unique effects on the body, emotions and mind. Some of these are derived from common herbs; others are from poisonous plants; some remedies are made from toxins and venoms. Homeopathic pharmacists carefully prepare these substances in a time-tested manner that will enhance their usefulness and minimize their potential harm. The substances are carefully diluted to eliminate toxic effects while, at the same time, shaking or grinding them in a way that energizes their helpful effects. This use of a dilute-similar substance is somewhat like a vaccine or allergy desensitization.

In summary, homeopathy stimulates the healing process by temporarily establishing an artificial disturbance of health with medicines. The disturbance, when similar to the disturbance caused by the disease, makes the body work harder to get well. The healing changes that follow are the result of this stimulation. While simple in theory, this process requires skill and experience, particularly in chronic conditions. In this way, the patient can be guided to a healthful recovery over the weeks or months needed for the body to repel the disease and to re-grow damaged tissues. What are migraines?

Sulphur

Aconite
Aconite treats a child who has diarrhea with the colic and cannot find any position that makes them feel comfortable. They may have a white tongue and be very thirsty. Stools may be the color of clay.

Calcarea carbonicum
Calcarea colic is common in children with delayed dentition and those who want to nurse all the time but do not thrive. They become colicky whenever they eat, and they can refuse to eat. They can have a delayed closing of the fontenelles as well.

Colocynth
The child needing Colocynth is better lying on their stomach, but will cry if they are moved from this position. Pains are better from hard pressure, like Belladonna. Stools will be loose, liquid, and gassy.

Nux vomica
Nux treats a colic that is brought on by eating. Child can be constipated and gassy, with pain around the navel whenever he eats anything. If a nursing mother eats food that disagrees with the child, Nux can be remedy. They can have diarrhea after drinking milk as well. Child can have dry skin, lips, and mouth and be sensitive to damp and cold, feeling chilly from exposure to the cold. They are better when they are kept warm, and from walking around. Hands and feet will both feel cold.

China
The remedy China, or Cinchona, will make the child double up, but this will relieve the symptoms. The abdomen will be enlarged, and the child will be nauseous as well. Fruits can cause this type of colic in an infant.

Belladonna
If the child does not want the belly touched lightly but is relieved by hard pressure on the abdomen, this calls for Belladonna. Pains appear and disappear suddenly as well, but they are intense and shooting.

Podophyllum
Podophyllum treats severe colic, with a great deal of diarrhea. The stool is watery and gushing. Teething children may experience diarrhea that produces colic needing Podophyllum. The indicator is a child with loose stools, who is teething and presses his teeth or gums together for relief.

Arsenicum
If the food passes undigested, look to Arsenicum. The stools are smelly, and the child is very anxious who needs this remedy. They cry while nursing and after. The Arsenicum child is very restless.

Government to fund research on Homoeopathic cure for swine Flu

Rupees 5 lakh have been sanctioned for the research centre of the Dhondumama Sathe Homoeopathic Medical College to tackle H1N1 flu menace. The
announcement was made by Shobha Bacchav, Minister of State for Public Health.

Bacchav was the chief guest at a day-long seminar on "swine flu and its containment and treatment through homeopathy", organised on Friday to coincide with the foundation day celebrations of the Maharashtra Technical Education Society, which runs the Dhondumama Sathe Homoeopathic medical college.

Bachchav assured that the government and municipal agencies are doing their best to keep the flu under check. She said there was no reason to get alarmed and that the situation is under control. She invited suggestions and assistance from practitioners of alternative medicines to help control the spread, besides the conventional allopathic treatment.

Around 300 Islanders were prescribed Tamiflu between last Friday and today (Thursday), which compared to 475 during the previous week, while two people were being treated for the disease at St Mary’s Hospital.

"Although the numbers of people collecting anti-virals is down, we would encourage everyone to still ensure good hand hygiene and use tissues to catch their sneezes which should then be binned," said a hospital spokesperson.

"The medicines do not interfere with other medications prescribed by doctors and they can be taken by young children, pregnant women and elderly people," he said.

Allopathy may not be the only cure for swine flu. Homoeopaths say they have an alternative cure for the H1N1 infection without any side effects at
that. Ayush, a wing of the ministry of health that controls alternative medicine practitioners, is expected to announce a cure on Thursday after studying a report submitted by nodal homoeopathic institutions.

A group of homoeopaths started an SMS campaign on Wednesday, saying Influenzinum 1M' can be given to adults and Influenz 200' to kids to prevent them from contracting the disease. The SMS does not, however, say what medicine to take if one has tested positive for swine flu. They are apparently waiting for Ayush's missive before declaring the name and dosage of the curative medicine.

Salt Lake-based National Institute of Homoeopathy (NIH), which reports directly to Ayush, is awaiting a ratification from the ministry before announcing the official path that homoeopaths should take while treating swine flu patients. Homoeopaths across the state are, however, already administering drugs to H1N1 patients and say the disease can be completely cured through homoeopathy.

NIH director Eswara Das said the institute has been swarming with flu patients and that most are in a state of panic. However, it is yet to get a patient who has tested positive for the H1N1 virus. "We are trying to arrive at a clear route for treatment of swine flu and are awaiting Ayush's directions that are due on Thursday," Das said.

"The flu patients that we have got have been given Apconite and Gelsimium the age old favourites for treating flu. However, we have to administer something more focused if we have to treat H1N1. By Thursday we will be able to declare that. Since this will have the backing of the health ministry, patients can feel reassured," Das added.

Noted homoeopath K D Banerjee said it is extremely important to wait for the report before starting treatment for swine flu. Drugs like Eupotorium P and Belladonna 200 can be very useful. "These drugs can be used for any flu that comes with a severe headache. Swine flu is serious business and we have to observe the symptoms carefully before administering any drug, but it can certainly be treated through homoeopathy. However, I am sending all my patients to get themselves checked at ID Hospital before I start treatment on them," Banerjee added.

Dr Arup Chatterjee, another homoepath, said Influenzium is a protective medicine, while Belladonna can be handy in case of flu. But a pathology test is necessary to start the treatment.

Following is a case of a 42-year-old man Mr. Narayanmurthy(name changed), who was suffering from Oligospermia. He had previously consulted many specialists but none of their treatments had shown any results. Discouraged and depressed, he stopped the treatment and stopped socializing as well. After 6 years, Mr. Narayanmurthy, at a friend’s suggestion, visited Dr. Batra’s® Clinic. Using Homoeopathic remedies wisely

It must be remembered that in cases of well-established illnesses of long-standing such as asthma and epilepsy, it is not right to prescribe a Preface 7 casual prescription. Instead, one must see the patient and have a detailed discussion with him or her to find out about the illness as well as the constitution of the person in order to reach the constitutional remedy.

Both must match as precisely as possible. In my experience, many a time, the patient did not respond to the standard well known prescription but after a detailed personal examination of the patient, including his state of mind, the prescription given worked wonderfully well. For example, patients of epilepsy experience auras of a different nature
before the actual attack. One such patient used to experience loud, unbearable noises and would not go to sleep out of fear. He felt as if his head and mind were squeezed in a vice. Based on his state of mind, I prescribed Cactus and it worked wonders. He started to sleep normally and the epileptic seizures also disappeared. Ironically, Cactus is not
mentioned amongst the remedies for epilepsy. It is important that all such patients be observed for at least a few days. If a rush of blood to the head is noted and the blood pressure rises, Cactus would be the ideal medication.

Similarly, one should look for typical signs and symptoms of the illness before prescribing. In diseases of the gall bladder, a number of medications are useful. Once, I tried almost all of them on a gall bladder patient, but none worked. After a personal examination of the patient, I found that he was a nervous, psychic wreck. I gave him Sepia and he got
better – the pain totally disappeared! In all cases of chronic illnesses, the patient should be studied in detail. On another occasion, I gave Aconite and Belladonna to a kidney patient in view of the acute nature of the sickness but it simply did not work. Apparently, I had overlooked the constitution of the patient.

Belladonna and Aconite would have worked if heat had been making him worse and if cold offered him relief. However, that particular patient felt worse with cold baths. As soon as I gave him Magnesia Phosphoricum and Colocynth, he immediately got better. There are no quick fixes in Homoeopathy. One should get into the habit of forgetting the disease for a moment and give due attention to the individual symptoms and constitution of the patient. A list of hot and cold remedies should be kept mind. In a person of hot temperament, the medication designed for a cool-minded person will do harm instead of doing good. Some people tolerate heat better than cold and vice versa.

Some like movement, while others like complete rest. All these factors form the constitution of the patient and should be kept in mind while prescribing a remedy. In a busy practice, the experienced homoeopath can prescribe a routine and well tried prescription for a particular ailment and it often works. However in case of chronic, long-standing illnesses, Preface 8 one must spend enough time on a detailed study of the patient as well as the illness.

In general, the homoeopath avoids combining the remedies. I also did the same initially but later on changed my practice. I did not have enough time to be able to arrive at one single remedy. In Rabwah, I was deeply involved in my official duties: in Waqf-e-Jadid, Ansar Ullah and Khuddamul Ahmadiyya etc. I had to be present in committee meetings of Anjuman Ahmadiyya and Tahrik-e-Jadid. Apart from that, I ran a homoeopathic dispensary in the Waqf-e-Jadid office in the evenings and would see up to one hundred patients a day. I had started the dispensary at home during the time between Maghrib and Isha (evening and night prayers). The shortage of time compelled me to devise the
compounding of more than one remedy. As I already indicated, I had done an extensive study of homoeopathic remedies and had informally practised homoeopathy for years. On the basis of this knowledge and experience, the compounding of medicines worked very well. In some cases, I had to change the compounds and in certain obstinate cases, I carried out a detailed personal study of the patient’s constitution and his disease.

Secondly, more and more remedies are being added to the homoeopathic Materia Medica. New remedies are being found to be more effective. Some ailments are not amenable to just any remedy. Compounding of more than one remedy works like a new medication. Many of the old remedies are already natural compounds themselves,
such as Nux Vomica, which is a combination of many natural constituents. While prescribing compounds, my concern is about their final characteristic features. It is not necessary that the total effect of the constituted remedies must be the sum total of all. Some remedies annul some of the effects of the other. Thus at the end, the compound may have a totally different effect.

On the basis of the symptoms, homeopathy can offer an effective cure to swine flu. Swine flu is an acute and highly contagious respiratory disease caused by the orthomyxovirus. It is a respiratory disease related mainly to pigs. Orthomyxovirus regularly causes eruptions of influenza in pigs. The swine flu virus cause high levels of sickness, but low rates of death among pigs. The swine flu virus has the tendency to circulate among swine throughout the year. In a nutshell, people should know the following about swine flu - Symptoms: running nose, fever, sneezing and dullness. Primary symptoms are very similar to that of influenza. On the basis of symptoms like cough, cold, sore throat and fever, one cannot be considered as a patient of swine flu. So, there is no need to panic. Target: persons having significant risk of catching flu in general include the following: young children, older people having less immunity, pregnant women, persons with chronic health problems (such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease). But it has often been seen in the past that during various epidemics, most people who succumb to this dreadful disease are healthy young adults.

So, it's important that healthy people should also maintain their overall health and diet. Complications of swine flu include sinus infections, ear infections, bronchitis, pneumonia. Transmission is through coughing, sneezing, kissing, the touching of infected objects, the touching of the nose, mouth and/or eyes with infected hands. The age-old proverb 'Prevention is better than cure' stands effective in this period of time. Giving respect to this, the following measures could be adopted: There are everyday actions people can take to stay healthy. In addition: Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. Wash your hands more often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Try to avoid close contact with sick people. Influenza is thought to spread mainly through coughing or sneezing. If you get sick, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that you stay home. Moreover, it is advisable to limit contacts with others to stop any likelihood of spreading or contracting he virus. For the sake of prevention, one can also have tea or hot water with black tulsi leaves added to it. Other hygienic practices include the use of masks and tissue paper.

Most importantly, one need not get carried away by fear of contracting swine flu. Stress is the main factor that can undermine one's immune system. It is important to note that flu doesn't kill everyone. Yoga, meditation, mild exercise and nutritious diets can help keep one's immune system in good condition and can ward off infection. Most infections are taken care of by our body even before we know that we are infected. So instead of panicking about the flu, we need to stay calm and focused on continuing to be a healthy nation. Most importantly, the need of the hour is to spread preventive measures. Moreover, the media, instead of spreading panic through 'Breaking News', should try to spread awareness on how to tackle the issue.

Homoeopathy is useful in treating allergy

An allergy, also called hypersensitivity, is a reaction to something by our immune system that protects the body from infections, diseases and foreign substances. An allergen is any substance that the body perceives as a threat, triggering a specific chain of events called an allergic cascade.

Substances that often cause reaction are pollen, dust mites, birds, animals, certain food items and insect stings. The reaction may cause symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, runny nose, sore throat, diarrhoea, vomiting, itching, swelling and asthma. Symptoms vary from patient to patient. Although allergies irritate you, they usually won’t kill you. However, a severe reaction called anaphylaxis, no doubt, threats life.

Doctors all over the world now follow the homeopathic principle ‘like cures like’ for treatment of allergies. The process, known as vaccination, involves receiving injections of small amounts of allergens, such as pollen for instance, that are considered to be responsible for your allergy.

Thus an artificial disease similar to the natural disease is intentionally given to the patient and the doses are gradually increased so that the body builds up immunity to the allergens. The injections of vaccines are given over at least three to five years. Discontinuation is based on having minimal symptoms over two consecutive seasons of exposure to the allergens. The immunologists and the allergists are of the view that this method of treatment is more effective than the conventional treatment (in which anti-allergic medicines like Avil, Rigix and other antihistamines are used), which only temporarily suppresses the acute symptoms of the allergies.

Immunology and homoeopathy began in the same year i.e. 1796. Edward Jenner, the father of modern immunology, gave his first smallpox vaccinations at the same time that the German physician Samuel Hahnemann discovered homoeopathy. A vaccine is a biological preparation that improves immunity to a particular disease. It typically contains a small amount of an agent that resembles a microorganism.

The agent stimulates the body’s immune system to recognize the invading agent as foreign, destroy it, and “remember” it, so that the immune system can more easily recognize and destroy any of these microorganisms that it encounters in future. The symptoms associated with an immune system response are often uncomfortable to the individual, but are actually quite necessary. Symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, fever, coughing, itching, nausea, diarrhoea or shortness of breath are all produced as the immune system tries to fight foreign invaders.

Hahnemann introduced homoeopathy in 1796 in these words: “One imitates nature, which sometimes cures chronic diseases by adding another disease, and then uses a drug that is capable of exciting another artificial disease as similar as possible to the natural disease to be cured: Like cures like”. This principle states that a disease can be cured by a substance that produces similar symptoms in healthy people.

Hahnemann unlike his contemporary Jenner did not limit the scope of this great discovery to the preparation of certain vaccines only. He went further and started experimenting vaccines on himself. He would select a diluted vaccine and take its repeated doses and then record the symptoms. Slowly and gradually his family, friends and students also joined him in these experiments. Through great sacrifices the hidden properties of diluted medicinal substances were discovered and recorded. Then these records were used in clinics to match the signs and symptoms of patients with the recorded properties of a diluted vaccine. And miraculous results were achieved. Thus a fully mature homeopathic system of medicine was developed by its great German discoverer Dr Hahnemann. Now the homoeopathic materia medica has a record of carefully documented properties of more than seven thousand medicinal substances.

Homoeopathy does not treat allergies by blindly giving one vaccine made from allergens, which apparently caused an allergy, to all the patients suffering from that allergy. It rather carefully individualizes the symptoms of each and every patient and selects the most appropriate and suitable vaccine (homeopathic medicine) for that particular patient. In homoeopathy ten different patients suffering from an allergy caused by same allergen (the mulberry pollen for instance) may receive ten different medicines if their individual symptoms are different.

Homoeopathy during the last two centuries treated millions of people suffering from all sorts of allergies without any side effects. The author himself is a witness to its efficacy and has treated, by the grace of Allah, many stubborn cases of allergies and asthma without any side effects.

According to Principal-cum-Superintendent of city-based Abhin Chandra Medical Collage and Hospital (ACMCH) Prof. LK Nanda, the swine flu situation can be ``treated and prevented with conventional homoeopathic medicines like other viral diseases.’’ While speaking on `Management of swine flu according to homoeopathic method’ at the inaugural ceremony of a six-day national level reorientation training programme for faculties from homoeopathic medical colleges at ACMCH today, Prof. Nanda said, ``Like preparation of vaccines which involves the attenuation of virus and its preparation in different ways involving different methods, the homoeopathic formulae is going to be prepared from the H1N1 virus according to the homoeopathic procedures which will be the best prevention for the killer disease like swine flu and for it the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy has already put a request to the Health Ministry to provide viruses from the investigating laboratories in Pune and Delhi.’’
