In today's back-breaking modern lifestyle, back pain has become a common health problem. Most of the people are almost always hard pressed for time and do not look after them as they should do. Emotions undergo frequent ups and downs losing the much needed balance. As a result the disease catches the people napping.
The modern life style has set very high and ambitious targets for which people sacrifice important things in their lives. The simple enjoyments of family life for instance are ignored at the cost of emotional health. Emotional distress, sleep disturbance, depression and fatigue have special affinity with the disorders of the spine.
The problem is aggravated when doctors unnerve patients by using terms as disc herniation, slipped disc, degenerated disc, disc prolapse and sciatica pain.
Doctors also often fail to notice the link between emotional and mental distress, and the backbone disorders. Most of the patients suffering from common backbone problems are usually told by their doctors that when a disc degenerates, the soft inner gel in the disc can leak back into the spinal canal. This is known as disc herniation. Once inside the spinal canal, the herniated disc material then puts pressure on the nerve, causing pain to radiate down the nerve leading to sciatica or leg pain (from a herniated disc in the lumbar or lower back) or arm pain (from a herniated disc in the neck). And if this is confirmed by the MRI and other tests, the only option given to the patients is surgery.
The fact is that most types of surgery for the backbone problems are fairly extensive and of course involve risks. So it is usually in the best interest of most patients to manage their low back pain using non-surgical approaches and self-care. This writer has observed that many patients require additional disc surgery after their first surgery because it is impossible for a surgeon to get to the bottom of the problem. The surgeon can only touch what he is able to see. His knife cannot reach subtle emotional and mental stresses behind the disease. It can only remove affects of the disease and not the disease itself.
An allopathic doctor is taught not to believe the patient, ask as few questions as possible and believe only what he sees. But a homeopath must do his best to create an atmosphere of confidence and try to understand the patient. In homeopathy, mental and emotional symptoms are of paramount importance when prescribing for mental, emotional and physical conditions.
It was observed in nearly all the cases of backbone problems that were successfully treated through homeopathy that there was actually an emotional or mental stress behind the problem. Injuries through accidents and traumas are no doubt an exception (and they are also marvellously treated through homeopathy by the grace of Allah).
The majority of the patients are amazed to discover that their slipped disc and the similar conditions can be fixed through homeopathic treatment. I remember some ten years ago Mr Munir, a tall man from Sheikhupura (and an advocate by profession), came to me for the treatment of his slipped disc. He was also suffering from pain, stiffness and numbness in his thighs and also had difficulty in walking. He was panicked when advised by his doctors to go under the knife as soon as possible otherwise his legs may be completely paralyzed. He was extended this advice on the basis of his MRIs. He reluctantly opted for the homeopathic treatment with some hope as well as doubts. As the treatment went on he started improving and for the last several years he has been all right by the grace of Allah.
A correct homeopathic treatment works in three steps in disorders of the backbone. In the first step the pain, numbness or other feelings of discomfort are removed. In the second step the progression in the structural changes is checked. And in the third step improvement in the actual physical and structural changes starts, which can also be seen in MRI tests.
Needless to say that prevention is better than cure. People should not let themselves be overtaken by excesses in emotions. They should remember that mind is polluted first. Always get a load off your mind to keep at bay many diseases including the back pain.
