Indian homoeopath treats AIDS boy patient

A veteran homoeopath has offered to provide free treatment to HIV positive boy Anshu. The plight of Anshu came to light last month when he and his healthy siblings were asked to leave school at Balamundi village in Jasra block of Allahabad district.

The school was forced to taken them back after a public outcry. Dr R.K. Kapoor made the offer following the news report 'Little warriors bolster boy's HIV battle'.

It was published in HT on September 2. Dr Kapoor is former chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Central Council of Research in Homeopathy under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

"There is a likelihood of homoeopathic treatment completely curing the boy at this stage of the disease," says Dr Kapoor, who has recently written a book 'Control AIDS through Homoeopathy'. Dr Kapoor is not in favour of Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) for the child.

But homoeopathic treatment can come to his rescue, he emphasises.They highlighted the importance of accepting Anshu and his siblings back into society.

The bal panchayat members also had a meal with Anshu to convey the message that AIDS did not spread by mere touch or eating together. They also motivated Anshu to participate in the story-telling and poetry sessions that followed the bal panchayat.

Q-What concepts are important to you in your practice of homoeopathy?

RP-Homoeopathic medicines are prepared from natural sources such as vegetables, animals, minerals, chemicals etc. Potentization is a special mode of preparation. The end result contains dynamic curative power of the substance. The magic of minimum dose in the form of sweet pills is non toxic, harmless, safe and sure cure.

Q-What does homoeopathy mean to you?

RP-Homoeopathy means a great deal to me. It is my life’s work, my identity, my source of income and health insurance for myself and my family and my patients.

Q-How do you cure your patients?

RP-My treatment is very different. It is time consuming. During consultation, I ask my patients great many questions about their health problem, their physical and emotional history, their habit and the circumstance of their life. I maintain their records on my computer and graph their condition so that I can pick an approximate remedy out of 3000 remedies available . All this is done in the privacy of my chamber.

Q-Are patients hesitant while answering your questions?

RP-If their personal information is difficult or upsetting to relate, they are hesitant but I convince them.

Q-How much do you charge?

RP-The initial fee to my patient is Rs. 250 just for chronic case taking and Rs. 150 for acute case taking.

Q-Is it true that with homoeopathy, you have to get worse before you get better?

RP-Sometimes the patients feel aggravated, but it is temporary and the doctors understand it and change the frequency of the remedy.

Q-How long does homoeopathy take to change the level of health?

RP-That varies greatly, but within forty eight hours, the changes are visible.

Q-Do you send people to other doctors?

RP-I definitely recommend people to other practitioners when needed, if there is something that they need to have examined or tested in order to get a special diagnosis.

Q-Is it a substitute to Antibiotics?

RP-Yes, it is a better substitute to Antibiotics in infectious diseases like Bronchitis, Tuberculosis, Meningitis, Gastroenteritis etc producing no toxic effect and bringing rapid recovery.

Q-Do you think it is ideal for children?

RP-It is very effective for infant children without any side effects, Diseases like cold, fever, cough, vomiting , Diarrhoea, bronchitis, allergies , mumps, chicken pox are quickly treated. It is child friendly medicine

Q-How challenging has homoeopathy become?

RP-Homoeopathy works curatively and cn avoid surgery. Nowadays there are number of diseases like Tonsilitis, piles, kidney stones, cysts and appendicitis etc which are labelled as surgical but homoeopathy can cure it without surgery. It is sure cure for diseases like bronchitis, diabetes, arthritis and other chronic diseases.

Q-What are recent developments and future projects in your field?

RP-Homeopathy is a complete system of medicine. It is not limited to contain diseases but is universally applicable to all kinds of diseases ranging from cold to cancer, AIDS, bird flu etc. I believe that in near future, homoeopathic treatment could be a blessing to ailing humanity.

Jeremy Sherr is fighting AIDS with Homeopathy in Africa

Amid controversy, well known British Homeopath, Jeremy Sherr, complete with wife and children, has recently left the Malvern Hills in the West of England, for Moshi in Tanzania, to, in his words, "get out there and cure as many people as possible". Sherr, with colleagues in several countries, spent 10 years attempting to raise funds for a Homeopathy and AIDS research project. While there is a lot of funding available for AIDS research, they found that the moment Homeopathy was mentioned, doors were slammed shut.

After much frustration with bureaucracy and hard work only to be followed by disappointments, Sherr decided to head off to Africa and start treating AIDS sufferers in the hope of collecting enough evidence to convince the skeptics and raise the profile of Homeopathy as a viable and affordable treatment for AIDS. He is under no illusions as to the enormity of that task however, and recent responses from Homeopathy's detractors are not for the feint hearted.

Over the last year skeptics in the medical and scientific establishment have become increasing vociferous. Homeopathy was once considered innocuous by most non-believers and Homeopaths on the whole were left alone. Now, what Sherr calls "The Pharmaceutical Inquisition" has been growing in intensity, and Sherr's 'journalfromafrica' blog has not escaped attention. Severe criticisms of his attitude to anti-retroviral drugs, his approach to clinical trials and even his suggestion that Homeopathy can be of any use at all, have resulted in him removing several entries from the blog, including those describing the aims of, and background to, the project and descriptions of some of the first AIDS cases treated.

To Sherr's relief, but not necessarily surprise, early responses to treatment are encouraging, according to follow-ups so far posted. In one of his first cases, a very sick woman when first consulted had a CD4 count of 1430 after a month of treatment - extremely unusual for an AIDS sufferer. It is a sign of Sherr's awareness of the scrutiny he is under that he is careful to stress that he is not giving Homeopathy the credit for that extraordinary CD4 count.

Sherr's conviction is reflected in the statement from the blog, "...millions are dying of AIDS and malaria and TB, and the pharmaceutical companies are making fools of them with their expensive, non curing, mal inducing drugs. Homeopathy IS the solution for Africa - curative, gentle, natural, and affordable. No side effects - just effective!" One of his aims is to facilitate the training of as many Homeopaths in the region as possible, to carry on the work that he and the small number of local Homeopaths have started.

There is also a Homeopathy and Malaria trial in the pipeline at a local hospital and this is likely to further inflame the ire of the critics, one of whom describes Homeopathy, in a comment on Sherr's blog, as "not just pseudoscience, but a dangerous and unforgivable delusion".

AIDS is devastating Africa. Estimates are that somewhere between 24 and 30 million Africans are infected with HIV and 1.5 to 2 million die of AIDS each year. The disease has left an estimated 14 million children orphans. This problem is not confined to the basement of the Dark Continent. AIDS is one of the worst pandemics the world has ever seen. Sadly although billions of dollars are pouring into AIDS projects, in many countries things are only getting worse.
This situation needs a radical approach, and we believe homoeopathy can play a substantial role.

THE PROJECT

1) To relieve the suffering of as many AIDS patients as possible
2) To develop a homoeopathic understanding of the disease and identify those homeopathic remedies that are most successful in treating AIDS.
3) To spread this knowledge throughout Tanzania and Africa, enabling local health practitioners to run sustainable local services prescribing homeopathically for large masses of people.
4) To produce formal research on the treatment of AIDS with homoeopathy demonstrating what it is able to achieve.

serves as a consultant for the Tanzanian Ministry of Health and is opening the Tanzania School of Homoeopathy and Traditional Medicine.

THE FUTURE

Once Jeremy and Sigsbert have created a clinical and teaching infrastructure in Tanzania, more homeopaths from around the world have already committed to come to Tanzania to offer their expertise.
