WHO speaks against Homoeopathy: Is it justified?

The WHO (World Health Organisation) recently advised against using Homoeopathy to treat diseases like AIDS, TB, child diarrhoea, influenza.

Who runs the WHO? Who staffs it? Allopathic doctors. Allopathy has always derided Homoeopathy because from the 12c potency onwards of a Homoeopathic drug no trace of the medicinal substance can be seen (even with a microscope). So they say Homoeopathy is humbug.

I will not dwell on the vested interests who are out to defame and belittle Homoeopathy. I have already done so in an earlier article.

What I want to say to those esteemed ladies and gentlemen at the WHO and Voice of Young Science Network is that Homoeopathy too is a proven science. It is not some kind of faith healing. All the Homoeopathic remedies have been 'proved'; They have been administered to human volunteers and the the symptoms elicited from them have been carefully recorded. This is the Homoeopathic materia medica.

It is common sense that a system of cure that has survived 200 years and is growing in popularity by the day can never be nonsense or quackery.

Homoeopathy has been greatly undermined in the USA because of the sustained campaign by vested interests. A similar attempt is underway in Britain. And the WHO advice is to make the 'kill Homoeopathy' campaign a global one.

We appeal to the honest doctors at the WHO and Voice of Young Science Network to at least read some books by the masters of Homoeopathy and then say anything about it. Judging Homoeopathy by the yardstick of 'seeing and observing' is unfair. It took a generation to understand the real genius of Albert Einstein. With Homeopathy, it seems, it is going to take several of them.

Lovers of Homoeopathy: Now is the time to act

The recent advice by the WHO (World Health Organisation) to not to use Homeopathy in treating diseases like malaria, HIV and tuberculosis is another attempt to deride and belittle this great system of real cure. WHO is an esteemed body and when it says something, people the world over listen carefully. This advisory has dealt a blow to the reputation of Homoeopathy. How pained the masters like Hahnemann, Boeninghausen, Lippe, Hering, Kent, Nash, Farrington, Clarke, Tyler would have been at this sorry state of affairs.

Now is the time to act. I appeal to all lovers of Homoeopathy (who understand its greatness) to write in their views. We have to build public opinion FOR homoeopathy. We cannot let people who do not understand Homoeopathy to undermine it.

WHO advice against Homoeopathy: Another attempt to discredit the great system of cure

People with conditions such as HIV, TB and malaria should not rely on homeopathic treatments, the World Health Organization has warned.

It was responding to calls from young researchers who fear the promotion of homeopathy in the developing world could put people's lives at risk.

The group Voice of Young Science Network has written to health ministers to set out the WHO view.

However practitioners said there were areas where homeopathy could help.

There is no objective evidence that homeopathy has any effect on these infections
Dr Nick Beeching, Royal Liverpool University Hospital

In a letter to the WHO in June, the medics from the UK and Africa said: "We are calling on the WHO to condemn the promotion of homeopathy for treating TB, infant diarrhoea, influenza, malaria and HIV.

"Homeopathy does not protect people from, or treat, these diseases.

"Those of us working with the most rural and impoverished people of the world already struggle to deliver the medical help that is needed.

"When homeopathy stands in place of effective treatment, lives are lost."

Dr Robert Hagan is a researcher in biomolecular science at the University of St Andrews and a member of Voice of Young Science Network, which is part of the charity Sense About Science campaigning for "evidence-based" care.

He said: "We need governments around the world to recognise the dangers of promoting homeopathy for life-threatening illnesses.

"We hope that by raising awareness of the WHO's position on homeopathy we will be supporting those people who are taking a stand against these potentially disastrous practices."

'No evidence'

Dr Mario Raviglione, director of the Stop TB department at the WHO, said: "Our evidence-based WHO TB treatment/management guidelines, as well as the International Standards of Tuberculosis Care do not recommend use of homeopathy."

This is just another poorly wrapped attempt to discredit homeopathy
Paula Ross, Society of Homeopaths

The doctors had also complained that homeopathy was being promoted as a treatment for diarrhoea in children.

But a spokesman for the WHO department of child and adolescent health and development said: "We have found no evidence to date that homeopathy would bring any benefit.

"Homeopathy does not focus on the treatment and prevention of dehydration - in total contradiction with the scientific basis and our recommendations for the management of diarrhoea."

Dr Nick Beeching, a specialist in infectious diseases at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, said: "Infections such as malaria, HIV and tuberculosis all have a high mortality rate but can usually be controlled or cured by a variety of proven treatments, for which there is ample experience and scientific trial data.

"There is no objective evidence that homeopathy has any effect on these infections, and I think it is irresponsible for a healthcare worker to promote the use of homeopathy in place of proven treatment for any life-threatening illness."

Homework

However Paula Ross, chief executive of the Society of Homeopaths, said it was right to raise concerns about promotion of homeopathy as a cure for TB, malaria or HIV and Aids.

But she added: "This is just another poorly wrapped attempt to discredit homeopathy by Sense About Science.

"The irony is that in their efforts to promote evidence in medicine, they have failed to do their own homework.

"There is a strong and growing evidence base for homeopathy and most notably, this also includes childhood diarrhoea."

The UK's Faculty of Homeopathy added that there was also evidence homeopathy could help people with seasonal flu.

Dr Sara Eames, president of the faculty, said people should not be deprived of effective conventional medicines for serious disease.

But she added: "Millions die each year as those affected have no access to these drugs.

"It therefore seems reasonable to consider what beneficial role homeopathy could play. What is needed is further research and investment into homeopathy."

Homoeopathy and chiropractic

Homeopathy has been researched and tested over and again. Complementing these
research studies, two centuries of practice exhibit the effectiveness of homeopathic medicines in treating a variety of musculoskeletal conditions including joint and muscle pain; trauma; fractures and sprains; and sciatica and lumbar pains.

To address all of these conditions, DCs need only become familiar with a handful of homeopathic medicines. The following are the most useful homeopathic medicines for chiropractors:

•Arnica Montana. This is one of the most common homeopathic medicines for musculoskeletal conditions, prepared from the flower leopard’s bane.

This medicine can be taken internally or applied as a gel or ointment. An excellent first-aid tool for physical shock and injury, it promotes healing of damaged tissue and, when taken orally, helps control bleeding.

It is also an effective medication for joint and muscle problems, such as osteoarthritis, sore muscles due to unaccustomed exercise, cramps, bruises and sprains. According to recent sales statistics, Arnica 30c is the number one-selling homeopathic product in natural product supermarkets.

• Ruta Graveolens. Made from the whole rue plant, Ruta is a key medicine for bruising of the lining of the bones with deep aching pain, rheumatism, tendon injuries, painful bruises and sciatic nerve pain.

• Rhus Toxicodendron. Derived from poison ivy leaves, Rhus Tox has been used medicinally since the 18th century. It is primarily used for aching and stiffness related to rheumatism, osteoarthritis, sprains and strains.

• Bryonia Alba. From the root of the white bryony, Bryonia is effective for inflammation in the lining of the joints, as well as osteoarthritis and rheumatism with joints that are painfully hot and swollen.

• Apis Mellifica. Made from whole honeybees, Apis is indicated for a wide variety of conditions. Chiropractors find it useful for conditions that affect the lining of the joints, chest and abdomen — for example, arthritis, pleurisy and peritonitis.

Treating Fibroids with Homoeopathy

Uterine fibroids are the most common non-cancerous tumors in women of childbearing age. Fibroids are made of muscle cells and other tissues that grow in and around the wall of the uterus, or womb. The cause of fibroids is unknown. Risk factors include being African-American or being overweight.
Many women with uterine fibroids have no symptoms. If you have symptoms, they may include
  • Heavy or painful periods or bleeding between periods
  • Feeling "full" in the lower abdomen
  • Urinating often
  • Pain during sex
  • Lower back pain
  • Reproductive problems, such as infertility, multiple miscarriages or early labor

With fibroids, there are three remedies which are sometimes recommended.

* Calcarea Carbolica - treats glandular swellings and bodily imbalances
* Afis Mellifica - treats odema and inflammation of internal organs
* Lachesis - helps with the decomposition of diseased organs

There is little evidence to suggest that homeopathic treatment for fibroids has any great effect when used on its own. However, it may possibly have value when used as part of a complete, robust, system of natural treatment.

Fibroids form as a result of the subtle interaction of a number of factors which happen to coincide within a woman's body. There is no one "cause" of fibroids and because of this, they can be a difficult condition to treat. Surgery and medications do not treat the root cause so chances are that within a few months of treatment, the fibroids will regrow. Indeed, although natural treatment for fibroids can be extremely effective, it simply will not work unless a comprehensive approach is used with systematically eliminates every possible cause of fibroids.

Fibroids are a condition which respond very well to natural remedies and they are an ideal condition to treat because as they are so rarely life-threatening. It makes complete sense to try out a natural treatment for fibroids before resorting to surgery or any of the hormonal drugs which can cause their own side effects.

Sri Lankan Homoeopaths prevent Dengue with Homoeopathy

Dr. Mass R. Usuf – PhD, MD (Acu), MFHom, Former Senior Vice President National Association of Homeopaths & Affiliates and Country Co-ordinator for Natural Healthcare Worldwide (Switzerland) vis-a-vis the free post-tsunami homoeopathic medical camps conducted in the east coast, is of the opinion that Dengue fever (and even Chikungunya) is a disease which can be easily prevented to a great extent by homoeopathic prophylactic (preventive) treatment.

He says that empiric treatment has proved the efficacy of homoeopathic prophylaxis. Therefore, the dengue menace would assume the character of a very localised spread of some mild viral happening instead of assuming such alarming epidemic proportions with tragic consequences by providing such prophylactic treatment in all homoeopathic hospitals/dispensaries island wide, and by setting up temporary homoeopathic prophylactic centres in schools and community centres in major cities/towns.

Dr. Usuf says he would like to know from the Ministry of Indigenous Medicine and the Homoeopathic Medical Council operating under this Ministry what actions have they taken when these entities have the capability to contribute immensely vis-à-vis the prevention and treatment of dengue fever!

It is his contention as a homeopath that President Mahinda Rajapakse needs to direct the Ministry of Indigenous Health and the Homoeopathic Medical Council to form a committee and provide such homoeopathic prophylactic treatment to the vulnerable masses using the aforesaid premises. This would to a great extent reduce the numbers affected by dengue fever.

Dr.Usuf is confident that those suffering from dengue fever (even Chikungunya) would find rapid relief by taking homoeopathic treatment. A patient affected by dengue fever, he states, would be up and about within 48 hours with all distressing symptoms receding fast. Timely homoeopathic treatment even prevents a patient progressing into the severe forms of dengue fever – dengue shock/haemorrhage – which can at the end lead to loss of life.

Dr. Usuf recommends three versatile Homoeopathy drugs – Led Pal, Eup Perf and Pyro – which are given as prophylactics on a bi-weekly/weekly basis against dengue (and Chikungunya). These drugs are devoid of any side effects and can be administered even to a day old infant. The few complicated cases (shock/haemorrhage) can be easily treated by adding one or two other homoeopathic drugs as per symptoms manifested.

As the homeopathic drugs are so cheap, Dr. Usuf is of the opinion that treating people with homoeopathic prophylactic (preventive) treatment the government coffers will not be strained unlike in the present circumstances where the Health Services have to spend millions in treating dengue patients with extended hospital stay!

So the twenty million question this former Senior Vice President of the National Association of Homeopaths & Affiliates poses is: “What is the Ministry of Indigenous Medicine and the Homeopathic Medial Council operating under this Ministry doing when they have the resources and the drugs to embark upon a prevention program and even to successfully treat affected patients so that mortality rates would drop down dramatically in tandem with nil or with short hospital admissions”.

Dr. Usuf has seen many young and old patients afflicted with dengue fever (and Chikungunya) taking no longer than 48 hours to recuperate with no complications, no hospitalisation and no fatalities. He fervently hopes that President Mahinda Rajapakse would direct the Ministry of Indigenous Medicine and the Homoeopathic Medical Council to initiate action and implement a programme to combat this dreaded disease that is taking toll of precious lives by providing the homoeopathic prophylactic and treatment for those affected as well.

Chikungunya has come and is virtually gone. It is dengue time now. To add to the misery people are facing the threat of Swine flu now. However, Dr. Usuf very confidently says that it is opportune to mention that homoeopathy has ample, cheap and versatile drugs even to combat Swine flu.

Life and works of Italian Homoeopath Rocco Rubini (1805 – 1886)

Rocco Rubini 1805? - 1886? MD was an Italian orthodox physician who converted to homeopathy, to become the Medical Director of the Homeopathic Hospital of Saint Maria della Cesarea in Naples, and the Physician of the Count of Syracuse,

Rubini successfully treated Frances Bryant, the wife of William Cullen Bryant, in Naples in 1856.

In 1864, Rubini proved Cactus Grandiflorus, and he was awarded an Honorary Degree from the Homeopathic Medical College of Pensylvania.

Rubini was a correspondent of Adolph Lippe, and he was a colleague of Anfosso, Anniballi, Guiseppe Belluomini, Bondini, Cajaro, Hugh Cameron, Edward Cronin, Paul Francois Curie, Harris F Dunsford, William Kingdon, Victor Massol, Monti, G Palmieri, Polagi, Rabatta, Francesco Romani, Frederick Hervey Foster Quin, Sagliocchi, Simpson, Francesco Taglianini, Thomas Uwins, Varni, Vianelli,

In 1828-9, Rubini attended the clinical trials into homeopathy in Naples conducted by Cosmo Maria De Horatiis,

In 1854-5, with his colleagues, Ricci, Sabatini, Salutanzii, Spitelli, Rubini so successfully treated the cholera outbreak in Naples in 592 people, using homeopathy, that his ‘Rubini’s camphor‘ became famous and is still famous amongst homeopaths today.

In 1854, Rubini received a note of thanks from Commandante Filippo Rucci of the Royal Hospice, thanking him for the lives of 200 inmates, who survived the cholera under homeopathic treatment.

In 1855, Rubini received a note of thanks from Commandante Nicola Forni of the Royal Ale House, thanking him for the lives of his patrons, none of whom died from cholera under homeopathic treatment,

In 1855, Rubini was asked to treat the soldiers of the Swiss Regiment of Wolff Number 3 in Naples under the command of Colonel Eduardo Wolff, who wrote afterwards to thank Rubini, as all his soldiers recovered under his homeopathic treatment, including Knusali Gaspare, who also suffered with typhus.

The mortality rate for the homeopathic treatment was 8%, for the allopathic treatment 53%. The camphor tincture became known as “Rubini’s Camphor.”

Rocco Rubinia was a distinguished pioneer of Italian Homeopathy. Frederick Hervey Foster Quin, in 1834, tells us that he was practising at Teramo. Dadea says that in 1832 he went into the province of Teramo, where Homeopathy was held in great esteem on account of what had been accomplished by other physicians and veterinary surgeons, and by the pharmacist Crocetti di Mosciano, a distinguished botanist, who founded a homeopathic laboratory which attained a great reputation.

After having been engaged for eight years with his worthy colleagues in extending the field of Homeopathy in this province, Rubini returned to Naples and took up his residence there. In that city his enthusiastic devotion to the new science, his energetic efforts in its cause, and a Highly successful practice, procured him much renown, and in 1850 he was appointed physician to His Royal Highness, the Count of Syracuse.

The influence of Dr. Rubini with this prince was of great advantage to the cause of Homeopathy in this region. Through the intercession of the prince permission was obtained from the Neapolitan government for the establishment of a specific Homeopathic pharmacy, which opened in August. 1852. It was called the Dragon Pharmacy.

This institution was of great service in affording proofs of the unfounded nature of the allegations brought by allopaths, and was an effectual answer to the ridicule they sought to heal upon the new doctrines. It did much to establish Homeopathy yet more firmly throughout the kingdom, and formed a precedent in its legislation which was to produce important results.

In 1854 Rubini was invited to undertake the superintendence of the Royal Hospital for the Poor. It happened that an infirmarian, to whom he had confided the ditty of administering camphor during the first stages of cholera, reserving to himself the privilege of prescribing for the subsequent stages, found on his hands a grave case of the disease, and during the absence of the doctor, being without further instructions, he continued to give camphor until finally the patient became well.

Another very grave case was accordingly treated by the doctor in the same way camphor being used both externally and internally, and the result was again favorable. These two facts he considered as tending to prove that camphor could safely be prescribed in any stage of cholera.

Encouraged by this experience, he made use of no other remedy in the epidemics of 1854, 1855 and 1865, and out of 448 cases which came under his hands in every case the patient was cured.

Out of 255 cases treated by others in the same manner in Naples and in the Abruzzi provinces, only two deaths are recorded. Of those cured by him in 1854 and 1855, fifteen were in an algid condition. The cases of cholera sicca were not few; seven were accompanied with epileptic convulsions.

The camphor was prepared by alcoholic solution in equal parts with highly rectified spirits: the dose was five drops, at times twenty or thirty drops, given every five urinates on a piece of sugar. The spirits were rubbed over the whole body, eight pounds being once employed in a desperate case and were also injected; as preservative, they were administered in doses of five drops three or four times a day.

These facts are given in full by Rubini, and are proved by documents, whose authenticity and correctness have in but few cases been denied, in a work which he republished several times, each edition being enriched by the addition of new facts. The book was entitled Statistica dei colerici curati omiopaticamente in Napoli and on the strength of these facts he claimed from the Academy of France the Breant premium.

These statements were denied in the Allg. hom. Zeitung, Volume 75, page 136, and Dr. Rubini’s, answer with affidavits may be found in the same volume, page 159.

The French Academy refused to recognize Dr. Rubini’s cures or to award a premium; in Italy the government refused to avail itself of his services, which he offered gratuitously whenever the cholera broke out. It was not till 1866 that he could obtain any recognition of his merits.

In this year he was appointed to take charge of the Cholera Hospital of Foggia; but owing to the savage intolerance of the allopaths on one hand and the weakness of the authorities on the other the appointment was rendered futile.

The prefect of Foggia, intimidated by the threats of the old school of physicians, received him courteously and conducted him over the whole province; but neither at Foggia, nor at San Severo, nor at Alpicena, where the epidemic was raging most violently, did he permit him to prescribe for a single case of cholera.

In May, 1860, he was appointed to the clinical direction of the small hospital called the Spedale della Cesarea, which is under the charge of the Board of Managers for the Royal Hospital of the Poor. This office he held for three years and a half. The managers not being able to provide the necessary funds, Rubini defrayed out of his own purse the expenses necessary for cleaning the walls of the hospital, for renewing the pavements, supplying the beds with linen, etc.

During this period four hundred and fifty patients were restored to health, and six died, under his treatment; while during the three previous years, when the hospital was in allopathic hands, out of four hundred and forty eight patients the deaths were twenty nine.

A certain allopathic physician, of the name of Ciccone, being appointed Superintendent of the Royal Hospital of the Poor, Rubini of course found it impossible to retain his position any longer, and, notwithstanding the money he had disbursed and the success attending his treatment, he was obliged to renounce the hopes he had formed of continuing to demonstrate in that hospital the superiority of Homeopathic methods.

Another circumstance to which Rubini owes his enduring celebrity is the pure experiment he made about this time with the Cactus Grandiflorus. The Cactus Grandiflorus published by him in 1864 has been translated into all the languages, and at present forms a valuable part of every treatise of pure Materia Medica and of therapeutics.

As the only surviving member of the noble band of standard bearers in the cause of Homeopathy in Italy, Dr. Rocco Rubini, notwithstanding the obstacles in his path, continued with a youthful ardor to do all in his power to advance the interests of the science in whose name he had combatted for fifty years the enemies aroused against it.

When Rubini returned to Naples in 1840, the physicians practicing Homeopathy in that city hardly exceeded half a dozen. At the meeting of the World’s Homeopathic Convention of 1876, held in Philadelphia, Carroll Dunham, in his Presidential Address, spoke of Dr. Rubini, saying that he had sent to him letters of Samuel Hahnemann and some statements of the camphor cure of cholera. He also sent a number of copies of his book. Statistica dei colerici curati omiopaticamente in Napoli. These books were distributed free to the members of the World’s Convention. (World’s Con. Volume 2, page 1087).

Rubini wrote Statistica dei colerici curati omiopaticamente in Napoli, and Cactus Grandiflorus, following the publication of its proving in the British Journal of Homeopathy, and the American Homeopathic Observer in 1864, and in the American Homeopathist in 1865.

Homoeopathy can cure Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

What is DVT? Symptoms

Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, is a blood clot that forms in a vein deep in the body. Most deep vein clots occur in the lower leg or thigh. If the vein swells, the condition is called thrombophlebitis. A deep vein thrombosis can break loose and cause a serious problem in the lung, called a pulmonary embolism, or a heart attack or stroke.

Sitting still for a long time can make you more likely to get a DVT. Some medicines and disorders that increase your risk for blood clots can also lead to DVTs. Common symptoms are

* Warmth and tenderness over the vein
* Pain or swelling in the part of the body affected
* Skin redness

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is the formation of a blood clot in one of the deeply situated veins of the body. The condition commonly affects the veins of the leg (such as the femoral vein or the popliteal vein) or the deep veins of the pelvis. Usually, small blood clots do not produce any symptoms as the body is able to gradually break them down, without any immediate or long-term effects. Larger clots can partly or completely block the blood flow in the vein and cause symptoms such as swelling of the affected leg, pain and tenderness, and redness of the overlying skin. If the DVT persists in the vein, it can lead to a number of complications, including inflammation of the vein (phlebitis) and leg ulcers. DVT in the thigh carries a risk of pulmonary embolism. This occurs when the clot, detaches itself from the inside of the vein, leaves the leg, and lodges in the pulmonary artery, the main blood vessel to the lungs. If the clot is large enough, it can completely block that artery and cause death.

Homeopathy is an excellent treatment option for this condition at all stages. Homeopathic remedies not only offer symptomatic relief without any side-effects but also treat the root cause of the problem, thereby reducing the possibility of a recurrence.

Orissa Homoepath assures Homoeopathy can prevent Swine flu (H1N1)

Homeopathy doctors claimed that the disease can be prevented by increasing the immunity of the body. "We have preventive medicines. There is no need to panic,' retired principal of the Biju Patnaik government homeopathic college AP Sarangi said. Sarangi, who is now a homeopathy practitioner, claimed a number of people were coming to him to take preventive medicines.

British Homoeopaths fight back over WHO thumbs down to Homoeopathy

Homeopathic remedies can work side-by-side conventional medicines in treating some of the world’s deadliest diseases, claims an expert in the field.

Uli Holzer, co-founder of the new Southern College of Homeopathy in Tonbridge, says she disagrees with the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s view that the controversial treatment cannot help sufferers of HIV, malaria, TB or influenza.

The WHO was responding to a letter from the Voice of Young Science Network, a groups of African and UK medics, which says homeopathy is putting people’s lives at risk – particularly in the developing world.

One of its members told the BBC: “We need governments around the world to recognise the dangers of promoting homeopathy for life-threatening illnesses.

“We hope that by raising awareness of the WHO’s position on homeopathy we will be supporting those people who are taking a stand against these potentially disastrous practices.”

Before becoming a homeopath, trained nurse Mrs Holzer worked for 15 years in the intensive care department of a German hospital.

She told Kent on Sunday her experiences have enabled her to see the benefits of both conventional medicines and holistic remedies, adding that different people responded better to the latter than others.

“If I caught a serious illness then I would probably start with homeopathy, but if I didn’t get anywhere then I would probably seek medical attention as well,” she said.

“I do think it’s important that people are aware of their limits though and understand that there is no guarantee a homeopathic remedy will work for them.

“They also need to understand there is a difference between treating people and curing them.

“Obviously you would need medical attention if you suffered a broken bone or had a heart attack, but conventional medicine has its limits too when it comes to illnesses and conditions like arthritis.

“I would never advise a patient to avoid taking certain medicines but I think it’s important people have a choice.

“There’s no reason why they can’t use conventional techniques and homeopathic remedies together.”

Homeopathy is a system of medicine based on treating the individual with highly-diluted substances given in mainly tablet form, which those who practice it say triggers the body’s natural system of healing.

It works on the principle that a substance that might cause symptoms in a healthy person is used to cure those same symptoms in illness.

For example, one remedy which might be used in a person suffering from insomnia is coffea – a remedy made from coffee.

But the remedies are often so greatly diluted they contain few or no active ingredients, but homeopaths argue the water has a ‘memory’ of the active ingredient.

The treatment is highly controversial with many conventional doctors, who point to scientific studies dismissing homeopathy’s claims.

Mrs Holzer and two other local homeopaths set up the Southern College of Homeopathy – which has an open day on September 5 – to train new homeopaths and increase use of the practice throughout the UK.

She said: “It’s getting more popular because it’s all natural and there is no toxicity in the remedies we provide. I think the use of homeopathy will continue to grow.”

Homoeopathy is popular in Santa Monica, California

The Santa Monica Homeopathic Pharmacy has been in business within three blocks of its current location on Broadway since 1944. It offers free consultations with homeopaths, herbalists, nutritionists, naturopaths and other staff. They can't legally diagnose anyone, but they can tell people their options and make recommendations.

"This place is unbelievable," said customer Mitzy Robinson, who lives in Beverly Hills. "They are all bright and helpful. They care — that's important."

As the debate over health care reform rages on, little has been said about homeopathic medicine, much of which isn't covered by traditional insurance plans. Even with an economy struggling and consumer confidence shattered, there are Santa Monicans who are willing to pay out of pocket for their non-Western remedies. Why? Some do not believe drugs are the answer while others feel investing now in their health will cut down costs in the long run, keeping them out of the doctor's office.

"We try to get down to the root of the problem," said Kristin Rotblatt, an acupuncturist who works at the pharmacy, contrasting holistic care with Western medicine's palliative remedies. "We pick up on things doctors no longer remember to ask about because their whole idea is what drug will repress what symptom."

The basic tenant of homeopathy is that a small dose of whatever is causing a symptom to appear can actually solve the problem. Son of the original founders and current co-owner Bob Litvak gave the example of arsenic as a remedy for food poisoning.

He stressed homeopathy's non-invasive qualities.

"It's safe for infants, children, nursing mothers — anyone," he said.

Litvak said holistic medicine's real rise in popularity began about 20 years ago, as the public became more aware of options available outside Western medicine.

"It's definitely a trend that's spreading," Litvak said.

Curing diseases of animals (pets too) with Homoeopathy

One of the best sources available to animal companions for the administration of homeopathic remedies is CJ Puotinen's book "The Encyclopedia of Natural Pet Care".

"Homeopathic drugs are available in powders, tablets, pellets and liquids. Check the product label for exact dosages....

Homeopathic dosages are not adjusted for the type, size, weight or age of the patient as they are in allopathic medicine and herbology. In homeopathy, it is not the size of the dose that matters, but rather its potency (strength) and the frequency if application. In most cases, as soon as the symptoms improve, the treatment is discontinued, for homeopathy works by stimulating the body's own healing processes.

Everything that touches the remedy should be scrupulously clean, dry and at room temperature.

If your pet will accept them this way, give tablets or pellets whole by placing them in his or her mouth from a paper cup, spoon, dispenser cap or a small sheet of paper curved to act as a funnel. Slide, pour, drop or lightly toss the tablets or pellets onto your pets tongue, or place the tablet or pellets on a clean paper towel or sheet of paper held in your hand or set on the floor and let your pet help himself.

If your pet resists whole tablets or pellets you can make them easier to swallow. To crush tablets or pellets, place them inside a folded previously unused heavy paper, such as a folded manila envelope or a sheet of paper folded in half and in half again. Holding the paper flat on a counter top or other hard surface, tap the tablet or pellets with the base of a cup or glass until crushed. Pour the crushed powder down the paper's fold line into the animal's mouth, let your pet lick it off or transfer the powder to a small piece of paper shaped into a funnel and dispense it from that. If some of the powder spills, don't worry. Whatever your pet swallows will have the therapeutic effect.

To make a pill or powder easier to dispense, you can dissolve it in a distilled, filtered or spring water, preferably in a glass or clear (not opaque) plastic bottle. Do this by placing the tablet, pellets or crushed powder in a glass.....add a teaspoon to a tablespoon of water, and the material will begin to dissolve. Stir gently with a clean spoon.

To dispense the liquid, pour it directly into your pet's mouth or use an eye-dropper to squirt it onto the tongue or between the lip and gum line. After transferring all or most of the liquid, rinse the eyedropper before using it again.

If your pet isn't happy with these methods, you can pour it into a dish or his or her water bowl, though if your pet doesn't drink it all at once, it shouldn't be left where other pets might consume it.

Another method is to dilute the tablets or pellets in milk. Because milk sugar is used in their production, this is the food most compatible to homeopathic remedies."

Ms. Poutinen adds a couple of additional tidbits:

"For as long as treatment lasts, do not feed or expose your pet to strong fragrances or flavors, prescription drugs, full-strength herbal tinctures, Chinese herbs, or tobacco smoke.....For best results, give homeopathic preparations at least 30 minutes before giving your pet food or water or at least one hour after, although in acute conditions and emergencies, the time span can be shorted to five minutes on either side.

To avoid contamination, never return surplus tablets to a bottle or container. Store homeopathic drugs in their original containers away from heat, light and exposure to strong odors.....Open the container only when necessary and don't open more than one container at a time.

Because if United States Food and Drug Administration requirements, homeopathic remedies sold in the U.S. are stamped with expiration dates, but these are usually meaningless. Homeopathic remedies that are stored away from heat. light, humidity and electromagnetic fields remain effective for decades, if not centuries."

As a final note, it is often recommended to make liquid preparations of homeopathic remedies using some form of alcohol, such as vodka, for preservative purposes. Dr. Martin Goldstein, in his book "The Nature of Animal Healing", states that since a lot of animals don't like the taste of the alcohol, he will use distilled, filtered or spring water instead and stores the remedies in the fridge.

Gwyneth Evans is new chief of International Council of Homeopaths (ICH)

Wellington Homeopath, Gwyneth Evans has been elected chairperson of Europe-based International Council of Homeopaths (ICH), an organisation that represents 30 professional associations in 28 countries, including Australia, USA, Canada, Japan.

Created in 2007 to represent professional homeopaths and to promote homeopathic treatment for patients around the world, the ICH upholds the professional standard of homeopathy worldwide. Its creation was an expression of increasing popularity of homeopathy around the world.

In the early 1990s, Ms Evans was Vice-chairperson of the parent body (ICCH) which was involved in the setting of guidelines for homeopathic education world-wide.

According to Ms Evans, “This nomination feels like coming full circle after my early involvement in the 1990s. The profession has given me so much and now I can give back by stepping out on the world stage and offering a wider area of service. And I want to put New Zealand on that world stage. We are one of the few countries in the world that have both doctor homeopaths and professional lay homeopaths on the same register.”

She says the current aim of ICH is to show a united front internationally for homeopathy in order to gain WHO NGO status and to continue to set education guidelines for homeopathy colleges around the globe.

Ignoramuses and vested interests in Britain: Stay off Homoeopathy

The recent ongoing virulent and insidious campaign against Homoeopathy let loose in the British media is shocking. Almost everyday some new story or the other appears which denigrates Homoeopathy. Many in Britain have an objection to the Royal family believing and using Homoeopathic medicines.

I think the source of this campaign lies in the multi-billion (or is it trillion?) allopathic drug industry. Homoeopathy is a safe, gentle and inexpensive system of cure. No big drug companies and their ubiquitous suave, aggressive sales executives here.

If the general public begins to become aware of the harm of many allopathic drugs (the allopathic treatment of cancer is barbaric) cause and in contrast of the the gentle cure brought about by Homoeopathy; the fat profits of these drug companies would begin to shrink.

Hence this campaign to defame Homoeopathy in Britain. Homoeopathy has already been discredited and rendered insignificant in the United States. The next target countries are Britain and then India; these being the two strongholds of Homoeopathy.

To those taking pot shots at Homoeopathy, I would say: You don't know the ABC of this great system of cure and thus least justified in saying anything against it.

To those who apply 'scientific standards' and say Homoeopathy is not a science, I say this true. Homeopathy is not mere science. It is both an art and rigorously proved science. Judging it with strait-jacketed yardsticks is foolish. It is like saying religion and faith is bunkum because God cannot be seen or heard. I would advice those targeting Homoeopathy to have the courage to go tell that to the Arch Bishop of Canterbury!

I would also like to point out to the misguided ladies and gentlemen that some of the great Homoeopaths the world has seen have come from Britain. John Henry Clarke, Richard Hughes, A C Blackwood and Margaret Lucy Tyler (the author of the classic Homoeopathic Drug Pictures) are names that come readily to one's mind. Were (or are) they all quacks? Blackwood was the Royal Homoeopathic physician to the Queen in the nineteenth century.

I would like to conclude with the words of Mahatma Gandhi. “Homoeopathy cures a larger percentage of cases than any other method of treatment and is beyond doubt safer and more economical and the most complete medical science.”

Need one say more?

Difference between Homoeopathy and allopathy

The allopath views diseases as localizing in various organs and systems, and uses specific drugs to suppress those diseases. The homeopath, while not unconcerned with the localizing pathology, believes the core problem lies in what some call the central disturbance. The central disturbance is a mind-body disorder. In turn it has been caused by the disordered Vital Force, that energy which governs all the body’s systems and all the billions of biochemical reactions. Correct the Vital Force and the central disturbance will diminish, and the organism will begin to heal.

The allopath, being system oriented, sees high blood pressure as related to the renovascular system, colitis to the gastrointestinal system, arthritis to the joints, and so on. So the allopath selects an organ-specific or system-specific drug to suppress the annoying symptoms. He virtually never makes a connection between the patient’s mental state and the pathology.

The homeopath invariably does. The homeopath cringes at the very idea of suppression. Always his therapy is directed toward building up the immune (and other) systems, never in suppressing them.

Because the allopath is organ and system oriented he often prescribes more than one medicine, one for each organ or system affected. The patient with arthritis, high blood pressure, insomnia and anxiety could easily be given aspirin or ibuprofen for the arthritis, a diuretic and antihypertensive for the blood pressure, a barbiturate to sleep and a tranquilizer for anxiety – a total of five drugs for four problems.

The classical homeopath, on the other hand, would treat the same patient with only one medicine at a time intending to stimulate the body’s own natural defenses (immune system, nervous system, endocrine system, etc.) to overcome all of the patient’s problems at the same time.

What is Homoeopathy? A simple explanation

Homeopathy started about 200 years ago with a discovery by a German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann. Wondering why quinine was useful in treating malaria, he took the medicine himself and found that, when taken by a healthy person, quinine actually produced malaria-like symptoms. When given to a malaria patient, however, it was curative.

Homeopathy means, literally, “To treat with a similar disease.” Its central principle, “like cures like”, contrasts with other medical approaches. The term allopathic, on the other hand, means to “treat with other than the disease” and is used to denote the standard medical approach of today which attempts to counteract symptoms. For example, a patient with diarrhea may be given a drug that slows intestinal mobility.

To better understand how homeopathy works, it helps to consider two aspects of a disease. First, there is the immediate cause such as a bacteria, virus, toxin or internal immunological activity. Second, there is the patient’s response (their reaction and defense) such as fever, inflammation and discharge. These are the body’s attempts to eliminate pathogens and toxins and to heal tissue. While homeopaths do not ignore immediate causes, such as infection, their primary focus is on the patient’s attempts to respond and heal. Their aim is to strengthen the patient’s defenses and shift the balance in favor of recovery.

Dr. Hahnemann found that substances could be used to stimulate healing by applying the principle of “like cures like” in very specific ways. He would give the patient a substance that would gently nudge their system in the direction of the “disease”, reproducing the same (or almost the same) syndrome or whole set of particular symptoms in a mild form. He found this to be a very effective way to stimulate their natural defenses. It was almost as if the patient’s defenses could not distinguish between what the natural disease and what the similar substance was doing. Thus, homeopaths fine-tune the use of medicines to enhance the patient’s own attempts to overcome illness or disease.

In this manner, homeopathy employs hundreds of substances that have all been thoroughly studied as to their unique effects on the body, emotions and mind. Some of these are derived from common herbs; others are from poisonous plants; some remedies are made from toxins and venoms. Homeopathic pharmacists carefully prepare these substances in a time-tested manner that will enhance their usefulness and minimize their potential harm. The substances are carefully diluted to eliminate toxic effects while, at the same time, shaking or grinding them in a way that energizes their helpful effects. This use of a dilute-similar substance is somewhat like a vaccine or allergy desensitization.

In summary, homeopathy stimulates the healing process by temporarily establishing an artificial disturbance of health with medicines. The disturbance, when similar to the disturbance caused by the disease, makes the body work harder to get well. The healing changes that follow are the result of this stimulation. While simple in theory, this process requires skill and experience, particularly in chronic conditions. In this way, the patient can be guided to a healthful recovery over the weeks or months needed for the body to repel the disease and to re-grow damaged tissues. Thus, homeopathy works for animals as well as people.

Safe treatment of menopause with Homoeopathy

What is menopause? Symptoms.

Menopause is the time in a woman's life when her period stops. It usually occurs naturally, most often after age 45. Menopause happens because the woman's ovary stops producing the hormones estrogen and progesterone.

A woman has reached menopause when she has not had a period for one year. Changes and symptoms can start several years earlier. They include

  • A change in periods - shorter or longer, lighter or heavier, with more or less time in between
  • Hot flashes and/or night sweats
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Mood swings
  • Trouble focusing
  • Less hair on head, more on face

Menopause is a term that indicates the permanent cessation of menses. Natural menopause occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 years with a mean age of incidence around 51 years worldwide. One of the most common menopausal symptoms; hot flushes, occurs as a result of dropping oestrogen levels that cause blood vessels to expand rapidly with a consequent rush of blood to the area, leading to an increase in the skin temperature.

Most often, to relieve the symptoms of menopause as well as to reduce specific health risks in menopausal and postmenopausal women, allopathic physicians often prescribe synthetic hormones like oestrogen. The biggest side effect of HRT is that it carries a very high risk of developing breast cancer and other cancers that are common among women.

Also, a recent study has found that Indian women are now attaining menopause as early as at the age of 30. It also puts them at a higher risk of being affected with osteoporosis, heart diseases, hypertension and breast cancer, says a study conducted by Bangalore’s Institute for Social and Economic Change. The data for the study, which was based on the National Family Health Survey of 1998-99, collected information from a sample of more than 90,000 married women aged between 15 and 49 and covered 99% of India’s population living in 26 states.

Homeopathy is the safest mode of treatment before, during, and after menopause because it restores the natural hormonal balance without the use of harmful drugs. Homeopathic treatment, when started at the right time during the course of the disease, helps to avoid complications. It also helps to provide immediate pain relief without any side-effects, besides also reducing the recurrence of the pain.

Facial autoimmune disorder lesions treated by Homoeopathy

Discoid Lupus Erythematosus is a disease in which the body's immune system treats its own tissues as foreign and attacks them. The cause of lupus is unknown, and the disease usually takes one of two forms: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), which can affect any body organ; and Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE), which is milder and usually affects only the skin. DLE typically presents with skin lesions localised above the neck, and the scalp, bridge of nose, cheeks, lower lip, and ears. The lesions cause disfigurement of the face and skin, which also has psychological repercussions.

Worldwide, the prevalence of SLE ranges from 17-48 cases per 1, 00,000 population. The highest prevalence of SLE occurs in persons aged 40-60 years, and is approximately 10 times higher in women than in men. In about 10% of the cases, DLE progresses into SLE. When SLE gets more severe, it is likely to affect the brain, liver, and kidneys in addition to reducing the white blood cells and blood clotting factors.

Homeopathy is the safest mode of treatment as it heals the lesions and also causes the lesions to fade away, thereby preventing the disfigurement of the face and scalp. Homeopathic treatment, when started at the right time during the course of the disease, helps to avoid complications. It also provides immediate pain relief without any side-effects, besides also reducing the probability of recurrence of the pain.

Homoeopathy and children: Ear infections

Homoeopathy can go a long way in helping cure ear infections in children

Homeopathic remedies are highly individualized, so you should consult a homeopath, who can determine which of the many different homeopathic remedies best match your child’s symptoms and constitution. Here are some of the many remedies from which he or she may choose:

• Chamomilla may be given if the child’s pain is worse when bending over, if the child is irritable and whiny, and the skin is hot and moist. This remedy also helps when the ear pain is associated with teething.
• Ferrum phosphoricum is helpful for pain and inflammation when symptoms first appear and the child is flushed with a fever and a is tired.
• Kali muriaticum may be given to a child who has swollen glands and nasal congestion with a blocked Eustachian tube
• Mercurius solubilis can help in cases that involve pus in the middle ear, shooting pain, drooling and sweating, and a puffy tongue.
• Pulsatilla is often recommended when an ear infection follows a cold or develops gradually along with a moderate fever. Children who benefit from pulsatilla are often tearful and clingy.
• Belladonna may help if the child has a fever and flushed face, staring eyes, is unusually sensitive to touch, and is excitable

You should see your physician if your child does not improve within 24 hours of homeopathic therapy.

Treating mind and behaviour problems in children with Homoeopathy

Over and over, parents explain why they chose to avoid drugs in treating their children’s behavioral and developmental difficulties based on what they saw with other kids.

“When my brother went to a school function and saw his son [who was being treated with drugs] in the classroom, he was sick to his stomach,” remembers Jane Watson.* “He was so upset at how unengaged [his son] was.”

Watson’s daughter has been diagnosed as having Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD or ADHD) and learning disabilities (LD). Seeing other children in her family treated with ADHD drugs, and also learning more about the physical side effects of Ritalin, helped her choose homeopathy to treat her daughter when she was young.

Watsonville homeopath Lorraine Stern treats children diagnosed with ADHD with traditional homeopathic remedies. These remedies are considered offbeat in the United States, but in Europe, where studies have shown the effectiveness of homeopathy, medical doctors often refer patients to homeopaths for treatment.

“Children are especially rewarding to treat with homeopathy,” Stern explains. “Homeopathy is very effective in treating ADD/ADHD and emotional disorders.”

Watson felt more comfortable knowing that homeopathy was unlikely to harm her daughter, but she was overwhelmed at the positive change once they started the treatment. “It was almost instantaneous—it was miraculous,” she says of the remedy prescribed by Watsonville homeopath Dr. Jeff Lester.

Finding a good Homoeopath in the US

If you are seeking respite from endless visits for a health complaint. You may want to consider homeopathy. The focus of homeopathic care is “the restoration of health” – these are words from the originator of homeopathy, Samuel Hahnemann. Classical Homeopathy focuses on whole person healing. Your practitioner typically allows 1-2 hours with you as part of the process of finding the appropriate homeopathic remedy.

First you have to locate a trained, qualified homeopath. Homeopathic care is not licensed in the US and most states do not oversee the practice. Search national organizations such as the North American Society of Homeopaths or the Council for Homeopathic Certification. Both are sources of qualified homeopaths. A certification is not a license or a recommendation. What it demonstrates is a certain amount of education, training and the ability to meet certain requirements. However, there are excellent homeopaths who may choose not to be included in a directory. Ask family and friends if they know of someone. Check for local workshops given by a practitioner.

At the minimum you want a homeopath who has undertaken training at a school run by homeopaths. It is even better if the school had a training clinic whereby there was mentoring. In the final selection, just like any health practitioner make sure their is appropriate rapport between you. Ask questions. Check to see if they have training in other therapies. What kind of success have they experienced?

Healing is a process and it happens on many levels. You have to allow yourself time for it to develop and manifest. It can be rapid or it may take more time, especially if someone is beset with deep seated or multiple ailments. Homeopathy has been helping people for centuries.

Migraine and Homoeopathy

What are migraines?

A migraine is a very painful type of headache. People who get migraines often describe the pain as pulsing or throbbing in one area of the head. During migraines, people are very sensitive to light and sound. They may also become nauseated and vomit.

Migraine is three times more common in women than in men. Some people can tell when they are about to have a migraine because they see flashing lights or zigzag lines or they temporarily lose their vision.

Many things can trigger a migraine. These include

* Anxiety
* Stress
* Lack of food or sleep
* Exposure to light
* Hormonal changes (in women)

Ask the severity of symptoms to a migraine patient and he or she will make such a face that you know everything without them telling you. When a patient with migraine arrives in the clinic, we immediately know the diagnosis if he or she arrives with the symptoms. Well, the terrible throbbing pain migraine gives has been experienced by numerous people and scientists have estimated that the number will be on rise due to our hopeless lifestyle adjustments.

Though we know that exact cause for migraine cannot be found out, we know that there are many trigger factors and stress works as one of the strongest trigger factors. Eating patterns also seem to be working against the disease these days. Instant foods and food with lot of preservatives also seem to enhance the frequency of migraine attacks. Yes, it is called a migraine attack because of the severity with which it starts and progresses. Also high blood pressure (hypertension) seems to be one of the trigger factors.

Sometimes the headache may be associated with nausea, vomiting, giddiness etc. These symptoms may precede the migraine attack. The migraine is also seen more among women than men. The gender difference may be related to complex emotional disposition in women.

Treatment of migraine:

Conventional migraine treatment (Vasograine or similar drugs) treat the migraine attack successfully. But, these medicines most of the times act temporarily and they cannot lead to permanent cure. Moreover the tendency to frequent migraine attacks cannot be subdued with these medicines. Some people say that continuing these medicines for longer periods may be necessary, but still definitive proof of cure due to it is not seen.

This is the reason we recommend homeopathic treatment for migraine and we have found that homeopathic medicines help not only control overt symptoms of migraine during attacks but they can also alleviate the recurrence problem.

After we start with homeopathic medicines, the symptoms start diminishing in their severity. Initially the patients usually say that the attack that used to come every other day is now coming once a week or so. Slowly but surely, this frequency reduces further. With the aptly chosen homeopathic intercurrent medicine, patient gets totally cured. In my clinical practice, I have seen number of cases getting cured within 1-2 months without any recurrence (or very mild recurrence rate) further.

No doubt the role of constitutional medicine is great as far as the complete cure of migraine is concerned. This is the medicine that is decided by considering the physical, mental, and emotional picture of the patient. No doubt, apt and detailed history of the patient is crucial for finding the right constitutional remedy for him. Remedies like Natrum mur, Lycopodium, Tuberculinum, Natrum carb, Acid Fluoricum, etc top the list when it comes to migraine. But only a homeopathic expert can finalize the decision about medicine!

Dr. Shreya is a well-known Homeopath of India and has her online clinic. She is also author of many homeopathic articles. For further details about her services and homeopathic system of medicine, please visit her site - http://www.drshreya.com/and seek health expertise.

Curing colic in babies with Homoeopathy

Homeopathy offers numerous remedies to aid the digestion of babies and treat colic. Colic is manifested by a griping pain in the bowels that can cause an infant to bend double or pull up his feet. Gas or belching can alleviate colic, but some infants are more prone to colic than others. About 20% of babies experience colic. Symptoms can start as soon as three months of age, possibly triggered by the development of the digestive system. With crying lasting over three hours a day, mothers everywhere are in need of a solution.

Symptoms of colic vary from child to child, but most infants will pull up their legs to their abdomen and become red in the face from crying. Their feet may be cold, or their hands clenched.

Homoeopathic remedies can be used to treat acute colic. Observe the child to see if they are bending double, if they prefer touch or no touch, what position they are comfortable in, what is their mood, what color is their stool. These are the indicators that help differentiate homeopathic remedies for colic.

Chamomilla
Chamomile is one of the most common remedies for infant colic. Chamomile colic will produce a green stool, and the child may have one or both cheeks red, along with hot sweat and constant crying. A distended stomach is an indicator type of colic that needs Chamomile.

Pulsatilla
Pulsatilla colic displays a tender abdomen with rumbling from the gas. The child is cold and has a pale face. Eating ice cream, fatty foods, or fruit will trigger this type of colic. The child is peevish and nothing satisfies them. They may hiccough, especially at night. They will have much gas and dry mouth but no thirst. No two stools will be alike, if Pulsatilla is the remedy needed.

Sulphur
The child needing Sulphur is worse from 9 pm to midnight. They are better being carried or riding in the car. They may also have an earache or toothache from teething accompanying the colic.

Aconite
Aconite treats a child who has diarrhea with the colic and cannot find any position that makes them feel comfortable. They may have a white tongue and be very thirsty. Stools may be the color of clay.

Calcarea carbonicum
Calcarea colic is common in children with delayed dentition and those who want to nurse all the time but do not thrive. They become colicky whenever they eat, and they can refuse to eat. They can have a delayed closing of the fontenelles as well.

Colocynth
The child needing Colocynth is better lying on their stomach, but will cry if they are moved from this position. Pains are better from hard pressure, like Belladonna. Stools will be loose, liquid, and gassy.

Nux vomica
Nux treats a colic that is brought on by eating. Child can be constipated and gassy, with pain around the navel whenever he eats anything. If a nursing mother eats food that disagrees with the child, Nux can be remedy. They can have diarrhea after drinking milk as well. Child can have dry skin, lips, and mouth and be sensitive to damp and cold, feeling chilly from exposure to the cold. They are better when they are kept warm, and from walking around. Hands and feet will both feel cold.

China
The remedy China, or Cinchona, will make the child double up, but this will relieve the symptoms. The abdomen will be enlarged, and the child will be nauseous as well. Fruits can cause this type of colic in an infant.

Belladonna
If the child does not want the belly touched lightly but is relieved by hard pressure on the abdomen, this calls for Belladonna. Pains appear and disappear suddenly as well, but they are intense and shooting.

Podophyllum
Podophyllum treats severe colic, with a great deal of diarrhea. The stool is watery and gushing. Teething children may experience diarrhea that produces colic needing Podophyllum. The indicator is a child with loose stools, who is teething and presses his teeth or gums together for relief.

Arsenicum
If the food passes undigested, look to Arsenicum. The stools are smelly, and the child is very anxious who needs this remedy. They cry while nursing and after. The Arsenicum child is very restless.

Homeopathy has many remedies to soothe the pains of colic. Over the counter remedies in 6C or 30C potencies can provide relief. (If symptoms persist, consult a medical professional.)

Government to fund research on Homoeopathic cure for swine Flu

Rupees 5 lakh have been sanctioned for the research centre of the Dhondumama Sathe Homoeopathic Medical College to tackle H1N1 flu menace. The
announcement was made by Shobha Bacchav, Minister of State for Public Health.

Bacchav was the chief guest at a day-long seminar on "swine flu and its containment and treatment through homeopathy", organised on Friday to coincide with the foundation day celebrations of the Maharashtra Technical Education Society, which runs the Dhondumama Sathe Homoeopathic medical college.

Bachchav assured that the government and municipal agencies are doing their best to keep the flu under check. She said there was no reason to get alarmed and that the situation is under control. She invited suggestions and assistance from practitioners of alternative medicines to help control the spread, besides the conventional allopathic treatment.

Present on the occasion were Pradeep Sethiya, principal and Head of the Department of Homeopathic Philosophy, Maneesha V Solanki, vice-principal and head of the department of medicine and therapeutics as well as the director of the PG Department, Kirti Jog, lecturer in preventive and social medicine and K C Shah, head, department of homeopathic materia medica.

Homoepathy can cure skin diseases

Listing the benefits of homeopathy in skin diseases which can be broadly classified on the basis of their cause into infections, allergies or auto-immune disorders and physiological disturbances, Dr Batra’s Homeopathy Clinic today stated the skin problems can be effectively treated with homeopathy.
In a press release issued here today, it state that Infections can be due to viruses, bacteria, fungi, or parasites. While measles, chicken pox, herpese, and warts are common examples of viral infections, impetigo, folliculitis and abscesses are bacterial infections. Fungal and infestation by lice are parasites skin infections. Eczema and urticaria are allergic manifestations where psoriasis, lupus and vitiligo are auto-immune in nature. Physiological disturbances such as hormonal changes along with other contributory factors can lead to conditions like acne and seborrhoeic deramatitis.

Homeopathy recognises the body as a unified whole of physical as well as psychological components and confronts the problem deep within. Homeopathic medicines unlike antibiotics, anti-fungals, anti-parasitics or anti-virals do not target causative organisms. They boost the immune system of the body to fight and overpower them instead, it is for this reason that homeopathic remedies are invaluable in the prevention of diseases too. for example, morbillinum and variolinum have been used to prevent measles and chicken pox respectively. Homeopathy does not advocate the use of external applications as they ten to suppress the disease only to return with a vengeance at a later time or to affect another more important organ or system manifesting in a completely different way.

In acute diseases like measles and chicken pox the homeopath uses his discretion in deciding whether to medicate or not, knowing that these diseases are self limiting and usually run their natural course uneventfully. However medicines may be prescribed to treat the distressing symptoms and to prevent complications. Outbreaks of herpes siumples can be easily controlled by the use of remedies like nitric acid and rhus tox. In case of herpes zoster, depending upon the site involved, the medicine is selected. for example, ranunculus bulbosis is useful for herpes zoster affecting the trunk and aranea diadema is good for herpetic trigeminal neuralgia.

Homoeopathy cures Seborrhoeic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is one of common causes of stubborn dandruff and occurs in all age groups. This condition primarily affects the sebaceous glands present in the skin. Some of the symptoms include small reddish-brown eruptions or red, scaly, and itchy rash on the skin along with hair loss. The condition usually affects the face and the scalp, where it causes flaking of the skin. It may be infective or inflammatory in origin and outbreaks may also be triggered by hormonal imbalances, stress, or illnesses.

Following is the case study of a girl Heena (name changed), who was brought to Dr. Batra’s® Clinic by her parents as the last resort. In spite of having tried conventional treatment for many years, her problem persisted. She had thick flaky scales on the scalp, which used to fall on her eyebrows and face. She had developed intolerably itching and bleeding eruptions on her scalp along with hair loss, and her scalp smelled bad. Combing became difficult and she had to be tonsured. She used to be mocked at school by her friends and hence wanted to avoid going to school. Although a good student, she started lagging behind in her studies and her health started deteriorating. At the clinic, the doctor, after a thorough clinical history and examination, diagnosed her as a case of Seborrhoeic dermatitis. This was confirmed by a Wood's lamp examination and Calcarea Sulph, a remedy selected on the basis of her symptoms as well as her personality was prescribed for her. The doctor also advised her to wash her hair daily with an anti-dandruff shampoo, avoid harsh soaps, and avoid scratching as far as possible. Within a few months of the treatment, there was great improvement in the itching and bleeding eruptions, and there was no foul odour any more. She regained her confidence and her grades started improving along with her health.

Homeopathy is an excellent treatment option for this condition, at all stages. Homeopathic remedies not only offer symptomatic relief without any side-effects but also treat the root cause of the problem, thereby reducing the possibility of a recurrence.

Homoeopathic drugs work well with tamiflu too

Around 300 Islanders were prescribed Tamiflu between last Friday and today (Thursday), which compared to 475 during the previous week, while two people were being treated for the disease at St Mary’s Hospital.

"Although the numbers of people collecting anti-virals is down, we would encourage everyone to still ensure good hand hygiene and use tissues to catch their sneezes which should then be binned," said a hospital spokesperson.

Homeopath Hugh Harrison, of Hillis Gate Road, Northwood, has recommended the use of homeopathic medicines for flu symptoms.

"The medicines do not interfere with other medications prescribed by doctors and they can be taken by young children, pregnant women and elderly people," he said.

Homoeopathic remedies for your dog

Homeopathy is a form of medicine that determines the underlying energy of an animal, and what can be done to bring the energy back into balance. Homeopathy was used by ancient Greeks and was formalized in the late 1700's. There are six basic principles of homeopathic medicine:

--The body heals itself by producing symptoms in an attempt to recover balance.
--An energy imbalance exists prior to the development of physical symptoms.
--Disease starts from birth, not just in their separate episodes.
--To produce healing, all symptoms and the animal must be taken into consideration.
--Homeopathy causes stronger symptoms similar to the existing symptoms. The remedy would replace the illness, thus causing a cure.

The goal of homeopathy is to cure not only the symptoms of the disease, but all changes in the animal.
Remedies are determined by first identifying the severity of the symptoms and subsequently identifying which will be treated first. Homeopathic remedies are extremely diluted solutions of herbs, animal products, and chemicals. The more dilute the solution, the higher the potency. Homeopaths often recommend natural diets, eliminating process foods, and suggest vaccination frequency be as infrequent as possible.

Allopathy helpless agisnt Swine Flu, Homoeopathy to the rescue

Allopathy may not be the only cure for swine flu. Homoeopaths say they have an alternative cure for the H1N1 infection without any side effects at
that. Ayush, a wing of the ministry of health that controls alternative medicine practitioners, is expected to announce a cure on Thursday after studying a report submitted by nodal homoeopathic institutions.

A group of homoeopaths started an SMS campaign on Wednesday, saying Influenzinum 1M' can be given to adults and Influenz 200' to kids to prevent them from contracting the disease. The SMS does not, however, say what medicine to take if one has tested positive for swine flu. They are apparently waiting for Ayush's missive before declaring the name and dosage of the curative medicine.

Salt Lake-based National Institute of Homoeopathy (NIH), which reports directly to Ayush, is awaiting a ratification from the ministry before announcing the official path that homoeopaths should take while treating swine flu patients. Homoeopaths across the state are, however, already administering drugs to H1N1 patients and say the disease can be completely cured through homoeopathy.

NIH director Eswara Das said the institute has been swarming with flu patients and that most are in a state of panic. However, it is yet to get a patient who has tested positive for the H1N1 virus. "We are trying to arrive at a clear route for treatment of swine flu and are awaiting Ayush's directions that are due on Thursday," Das said.

"The flu patients that we have got have been given Apconite and Gelsimium the age old favourites for treating flu. However, we have to administer something more focused if we have to treat H1N1. By Thursday we will be able to declare that. Since this will have the backing of the health ministry, patients can feel reassured," Das added.

Noted homoeopath K D Banerjee said it is extremely important to wait for the report before starting treatment for swine flu. Drugs like Eupotorium P and Belladonna 200 can be very useful. "These drugs can be used for any flu that comes with a severe headache. Swine flu is serious business and we have to observe the symptoms carefully before administering any drug, but it can certainly be treated through homoeopathy. However, I am sending all my patients to get themselves checked at ID Hospital before I start treatment on them," Banerjee added.

Dr Arup Chatterjee, another homoepath, said Influenzium is a protective medicine, while Belladonna can be handy in case of flu. But a pathology test is necessary to start the treatment.

Homoeopathy cures infertility and low sperm count

Also called: Sterility

Infertility means not being able to become pregnant after a year of trying. If a woman keeps having miscarriages, it is also called infertility. Lots of couples have infertility problems. About a third of the time, infertility can be traced to the woman. In another third of cases, it is because of the man. The rest of the time, it is because of both partners or no cause is found

Oligospermia, a condition in which the sperm count in a man’s semen is lower than the normal range, is the leading cause of infertility in men. According to WHO statistics, there are about 20 million infertile couples in India. In about 30–40% of these cases, the male partner is responsible for infertility; whereas, in 10-15% of the cases, both partners could be having some fertility problem. Oligospermiacan be caused due to various reasons such as fever, certain medications, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption, which temporarily reduces the sperm count.

Following is a case of a 42-year-old man Mr. Narayanmurthy(name changed), who was suffering from Oligospermia. He had previously consulted many specialists but none of their treatments had shown any results. Discouraged and depressed, he stopped the treatment and stopped socializing as well. After 6 years, Mr. Narayanmurthy, at a friend’s suggestion, visited Dr. Batra’s® Clinic. The doctor at the clinic reviewed his case after taking a detailed history, examining the patient and evaluating his reports.

According to his reports, his sperm count was only 2 million. Also, the viability and motility of his spermatozoa were nil. The doctor prescribed homeopathic medicines for him, asked him to follow up every month and advised him to get his semen analysis done once every 6 months.

Mr. Naryanmurthy, already impatient, got his semen analysis done in the 4th month itself instead. Much to his delight, he found that his sperm count had increased to 30 million, 2% of the spermatozoa were alive at the end of 3 hours and their motility had increased to 5%.

This case proves right the homeopathic principle that when you treat the root cause of a disease, its effects get taken care of automatically. Homeopathic medicines should preferably be taken in the beginning itself because the more that one delays appropriate treatment, the more chronic the problem gets, which then takes longer to treat. Hence, many people who try Homeopathy as their last resort wrongly conclude that homeopathic remedies are slow to act.

Viruses may mutate but Homoeopathy still cures

Homeopathy does not depend on one drug or feature particular drugs for curing any type of flu. Homeopathy is a non allopathic healing method that was once the mainstream medicine of the 19th century. Because different remedies and combinations and strengths are prescribed according to exact symptomatic readings, homeopaths can successfully adapt treatments to handle viral mutations. Homeopathy was enjoyed by many until certain moneyed interests almost pushed it out of existence. Now there is somewhat of a resurgence of its use.

In an article posted on the website Homeopathy for Everyone, four Mexican Homeopathic doctors posted their first hand observations on the 2009 Mexican flu, and revealed the exact protocol they used to cure those afflicted under their care. The doctors who reported these findings from Mexico City, in May of 2009 are: Est. Luis Jamil Bonilla Galicia, Dr. Oscar Alberto Legaria Garcia, Dr. Emmanuel Alvarez Lorenzo, and Dr. Fernando Dareo Francois Flores.

These doctors included historically documented observations regarding the 1918 flu pandemic. For historical references they used "... the thesis written by Dr. Manuel Mazari to obtain his qualification at the Escuela Libre de Homeopata de Mexico: "Short Study of the Last Influenza Epidemic in Mexico City (1918)",as well as reports published by the Ministry of Health, news published in the media in general, and some clinical cases mentioned by homeopathic physicians"

Not surprisingly, the symptoms of the 1918 flu and the so called `swine flu` of 2009 are very similar. It`s interesting to note both pandemics started in the spring, in the month of April, and not in the official flu season which is autumn. Two additional symptoms, one of which is an emotional aspect that is part of homeopathy diagnosis, are noted by this study: "fear of death" and a "high fever" at the onset of the infection.

Mainstream, medical, literature, sources conclude:"...that this virus {A(H1N1) influenza virus} was the causative agent of the influenza epidemics in (1918 -1919), (1933-1935), (1946-1947), (1977-1978)."
The basic purpose of the Mexican Homeopaths` study was to identify common symptoms of the 2009 swine flu in order to outline a specific homeopathic based prevention and treatment model that could be used by homeopathic doctors around the world.

Research into how Homoeopathic remedies work

Now with the help of a machine built by the scientists of Bhaba Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, experts can show how the homoeopathic medicines actually act. Called as the ‘Medical Analyser’ the unique electronic device can study the time domain variations in the physiological parametres like heart and respiration rate, stroke volume, cardiac output and peripheral blood flow in the upper body parts.

This device not only studies physiological variations, but can produce four parametres from one source and with different software package, explore the possibility of disease characterisation in human body. As part of a multi-centric study, it is now on job to see whether homoeopathic medicines in higher dilution (12th or higher potency) cause any significant change in the autonomic response of our bodies.

According to experts, though medicines of higher potency do not contain even one atom or molecule of the medicinal substance, they are being successfully used to cure diseases for centuries. No specific study has conclusively evidenced difference between the ‘pure solvent’ and the ‘dilution’.

Even reputed journals like ‘Lancet’ has also questioned the ‘scientific basis’ of these facts. So now with the new ‘analysis’ these questions could be answered after a series of studies.

“The machine will be part of a study ‘On actions of homoeopathic medicines and potencies and heart rate variability and blood flow variability’ so that after the immediate use of a homoeopathic medicine, the changes in the physiological parametres can be studied’’, said Principal of city-based Abhin Chandra Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital Prof LK Nanda.

“The study is part of a team effort of BARC, Regional Research Institute in Homoeopathy (RRIH), CMP Homoeopathy College, Vile Parle, Mumbai and RRIH, Puri and for the first time it has been used to know the efficacy of homoeopathic medicines in the country’’, he added.

“Already 270 volunteers have been short-listed for various tests at the city centre,’’ informed a research scholar.

The high potency medicines, otherwise termed as ‘medicine without material’ act in the same process as we convert an iron material to magnet just after rubbing it on the latter’s surface without transferring any ‘matter’. But the trouble with the explanation is that the magnetic conditions can be tested in a laboratory, but for a homoeopathic medicine the cure is the only ‘proof’. So in future, this new device would help solve the myths and unravel the ‘science’ behind them.

Useful DVDs On Homeopathy

Featuring interviews with experts in the U.S., England, France and Germany, this comprehensive documentary looks at the origins, principles, and modern practice of the alternative and holistic form of medicine known as homeopathy. Two centuries ago, German physician Samuel Hahnemann developed this system of medicine, treating his patients with specialized, minute doses of natural substances intended to increase the body's own inherent defenses. Hahnemann’s methods had amazing results – during the deadly 1832 cholera epidemic that swept through Europe, homeopaths claimed a 97% cure rate.

As Hahnemann's body of knowledge increased, so did his following, although traditional physicians ridiculed his work, and homeopathy spread throughout the world. Today, homeopathic practitioners, physicians and veterinarians continue to successfully treat patients for a wide range of physical and mental illnesses, using ideas and remedies published by Hahnemann in his Materia Medica. Rather than suppressing symptoms, homeopathic medicines stimulate the body to defend and heal itself. Modern clinical trials have proven homeopathy to be safe and effective in a wide variety of non life-threatening conditions. But the processes by which these tiny doses of natural substances are able to cure remains, for many, a mystery.
